Forums - Gaming - What if...Apple announces iPhone + iPad connectivity to TV screens and release a gaming controller at their 12th Sept press conference...

Then Apple would win. On a serious note, I thought this was already possible.

Yea, good point.  Why the hell would anyone buy an AppleTV?

I don't know, but it will probably use iOS, so lots of iDevice owners will get them because they may want to own a TV with a familiar interface. Besides, it will probably be able to connect to iDevices wirelessly, so people could view photos, apps etc. on their TV screens using their iDevice as a controller which might draw people in too

Yea, I read up a little on AppleTV.  It actually is a decent price which is a little surprising ($99).  It doesn't look more than a souped up Roku box though to me.  I can see why someone with itunes and a big Apple fan might purchase it.  If you don't have itunes then I don't see any incentive to get it.   Are you talking about the AppleTV box or an Apple TV which they are rumored to be working on?

I thought we were talking about this

Oops, I was taking about the iTV (which they're working on), not AppleTV. My bad

if apple tries to make a move to get into the gaming industry and compete for the hardcore market they will be crushed...

Doubt it. They'll already have an install base of over 300 million...

yeah but those 300 million devices were not bought to be played on, yes gaming on tablets and smartphones has grown a lot. but poeple dont buy iphones because of angry birds, they buy it because if iOS the apps(apps such as whats app and skype not games), the features and the connectivity to the interent and all that stuff, gaming is just an extra thing. i dont say the iphone will stop selling i mean what ever they announce to attract the core and hard core gamer will fail miserably at doing so

Yeah, but lots of iDevice owners are also console gamers...So they wouldn't need to buy any new consoles because their iDevice already does the job

but does it do the job really? just because the controller is there doesnt mean its a hardcore gaming machine... does it produce good graphics? not really yes ther good for mobiles but not gaming consoles. does it have any exclusives? no...... any third party games? not really.... so it has games like temple run and angry birds.... ok does it have any proper online network? no..... are the biggest sellers of the industry on it? CoD no, GTA no, battliefield no, assasins creed (not a stupid game or app but a full sized game) no...... so why would any self respecting gamer want to play games on this instead of a Ps3, 360, WiiU, 3ds, or vita?

This is more relevant to the ipad,

I can already use my ipad through my TV with an HDMI cable. So just bring out a controller and its good to go.

Exactly. So what's stopping them? It seems like an incredibly smart business move.

A good question would be... Why the hell hasn't anyone made a controller for it yet?  Seems like easy money to me.

It would be time for Sony/Nintendo/MS to sh*t a brick if that happened.

I don't think that's in the cards immediately though. Sept. 12th is all about iPhone 5 and the new iOS.

If there was an announcement like this, my guess is it would be alongside the unveiling of iTV, the much speculated upon line of TVs that Apple has been working on and referred to in Steve Jobs' biography.

Nothing would happen, why would that change anything? just that now you could connect your ipad to your tv. If this is a serious question i think it's pointless. :/

AppleTV?

That would require people to purchase an AppleTV first though. I just talking about a generic lead which allows iDevices to be connected to any TV screen

With Apple, there is nothing generic and it would cost $100 -- or more.

And something like this would probably only work for an iPad --- which is 2x the cost of a console now.  (Because dumping an iPhone game to a TV would result is a blocky, small pix -- just look at iPhone apps on an iPad).
