How is the VGChartz mod team doing?

It's doing a great job. 299 32.97%

It's doing okay. 143 15.77%

It's not doing well. 432 47.63%

Total:874

I wasn't trying to dump on the other mods, but I'm just saying that I like StarCraft's moderation style the best. He doesn't take himself too seriously, and when mods do that, it honestly drives me crazy. He shows that he's also a user as well as a moderator. His dimeanor in telling people in the Xbox thread to calm it down when off topic gets out of hand showed me that he knows what he's doing and is able to present himself to others in a professional manner.

Yes he may be new, and yes he has made mistakes, but he hasn't been conditioned as long as the other mods. I don't talk to him that much, but so far, I like what I've seen. That's just my two cents though!

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

So with the VitroBahllee threads, all of them were locked because he was just spam flooding the forum.

Posting it here, so I dont have to make 14 posts saying "Lock".

Thanks!

It is often a thankless role, I am grateful someone is appreciating it.

You're also right about mistakes. That said, the mod team is getting better at self-policing, and they're very tactful. For example, there was an incident a few weeks back where I misread a situation and gave someone a ban that was too substantial. While I was asleep (sigh, timezones) the mods discussed it, and then one of them sent me a polite email explaining the concern and asking whether I would be comfortable changing the ban. Which is just the way I'd like these things to work.

I really do try not to take myself too seriously. Being a mod can be a pain in the ass, and every second poster disagrees with all the decisions you make. If you take it too seriously, you start to take it personally - at which point you're screwed lol.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

I think we did well during what was a surprisingly stressful Gamescom!

Though there were about 50 bans in the last 48 hours...

Yeah; guess that's what happens when I leave for a couple days. All hell breaks loose!

You guys deserve a ban on the back, I mean a pat on the back.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Some of the new mods have the tendency of feeling the need to tell people they're in power. Even going to the extent of pre-emptively calling out people over things that haven't happened yet. It derails the threads needlessly, and comes off as nothing more than them flailing their "I'm the boss" flag. We don't need to be reminded that they can lock a thread or moderate people if it degenerates. We all know there are mods on VGC. I guess some will argue that it is all done to make sure the tone of the threads remain civil and whatnot, but that's not the way it comes across, based on the reaction of some users here.

And one of the site's best users just permabanned himself because of this behavior. Mods should not be going into a thread and threatening people before they had done anything wrong.

Who permabanned himself?

Shinobi.

So you'd rather we just go in and ban people, then?

One of the big things we were advised was "preventative measures". That's instead of banning people left and right, if a conversation starts going sour (and if there's some borderline content/already moderated users) then let your presence be known so things return to normality. That's been working well thus far and has resulted in fewer bans and better discussion. Shinobi left the site for other reasons, as was discussed in a PM to me and to Krezzy also, not for this reasoning.

I've heard nothing but praise for this approach until now. Didn't realize it was disliked by some because I'd assume keeping threads open for longer, not banning people as much and letting conversation go smoother would be a good thing.
