Forums - Nintendo - Wii U To Be $200 And Launch November 18th?

Question should be, why would they sell their next console in the same price as their XL version of the 3DS?

To gain a huge marketshare and determine the course of the 8th generation in advance. Imagine if the Wii came out in 2004 instead of 2006. Microsoft and Sony would have dramatically cut down on their machines' powers in order to keep development costs low, and would have invested less into online services. By going first and going low, Nintendo can play this gen on their terms: relatively low tech with an interesting control scheme.

no way will this be cheaper than the ps3 or xbox 360, unless they want to lose money on every console sold that is. its stronger, has more ram newer GPU and add to all that the cost of the tablet, logically its almost impossible of the WiiU is cheaper than the ps3/xbox 360

is it possible that they just lowered the specs all around to get it at this price?? Not saying thats whay happened, just painting a picture

no way in hell is that possible, you cant just lower the specs around release like this. how will all the games that were built up one the hardware work on it if they cut the specs? remember when sony were releasing the vita and rumers were that they cut the RAM in half, sony then came out and said you cant just do that, once u give a game some specs its done. the only thing they can do is lower hard drive space and types of screen on the tablet uses, and since it was a resistive touchscreen when they announced it was already a low budget screan. if it does go on for this price just know for sure that the console and tablet hardware will be the crappiest thing since the virtual boy

fair enough and i agree to the bolded

$200 is a great strategy considering Nintendo wanted a price tag that they could sustain for awhile. If not, I would still gladly pay up to $299 at launch but that's not saying everyone else would.

Well, the same thing can be said about Super Mario 64. Bundled titles don't need to be of low quality.

Bundled games at launch are almost inexistant now. Just going by Nintendo... GBA, GC, DS, 3DS didn't had one. DC, PS2, PS3, PSP, XB and 360 didn't either. In today's age this is rare. Wii was the exception and I'm not saying Wii Sports is bad quality, it was revolutionary and perfect for the job, but it was much simpler than Nintendoland, imo.

Still, giving you a wide range of high quality titles to choose from (let's say that as you check out the eStore for the first time you will be able to download one full game for free) should push sales by a lot without raising the Wii U's price.

While November 11th and 18th are good guesses for release dates given Nintendo's preference to release hardware on a Sunday, $200 is far too low to be believed ...

Certainly, Nintendo (probably) learned from the 3DS and will try to launch the Wii U at a reasonable price but they also learned from the Gamecube and will not see much of an upside in undercutting the competition simply to undercut the competition.

The lowest realistic price is $250, with $300 being more plausable, and $350 being a possibility.

That's a very good question, and the reason why Nintendo won't sell the WiiU at $200.

If they sell a console with a tablet-style controller that has a screen that's bigger than the one found in their biggest handheld, and costs almost the same, people find the handheld overpriced and it will damage its sales.

250 $/€ is the minimum I can see for WiiU, but if Nintendo is crazy enough to do it, I'm all in!

Is the WiiU really a next-gen console?

$200 is laughable not just for the simple fact that there's no way Nintendo could afford to release it at such a low price, but also because if it were actually released at the height of the holiday shopping season, people would literally be killing each other to get one. It would be your typical midnight Black Friday scene at Walmart, except throughout the country and at any store carrying the Wii U.

Edit:  Not to mention all the price gouging that would occur in the 2nd hand market as people with no intention of actually playing the system snap it up and then sell it on eBay for about 3-4X the MSRP.

Exactly. For the sake of likely thousands of lives, they will not do this.

Technically, yes, based on the timing of the launch and such. In practice... it wouldn't surprise me if it ended up being like the Wii, receiving a bunch of previous-gen ports and being generally ignored by the AAA developers of the world.

Strange.. $249 can't be the price. Reggie say that WiiU won't be launched at the same price as the Wii and that we will be surprised by the price of WiiU at launch.. humn...
