Forums - Nintendo - Wii U To Be $200 And Launch November 18th?

It's significantly more powerful than a PS3, and includes an extremely expensive controller.

I really don't see it being $50 cheaper than the PS3.

I don't see it happening either, but it's not a totally ridiculous rumour seeing as nintendo are sitting on mountains of money from Wii/DS, maybe even literally. They could afford taking a huge loss.

Gamecube was more powerful than PS2 and launched for 100 dollars less than it. It could happen... but thinking here... it's not going to happen at all, and not just because they can or can't.

It's because it would be bad business. They would be out of stock pretty soon, earning not much profit for that or any profit at all.

To me it's either 299 or 349.
If it's the former, it's a great launch price. If it's the latter, just okay-ish.

That is another thing. The  PS2 featured things like DVD playback and USB. It has a lot of auxillary stuff to make it more expensive like the launch PS3.

Nintendo has only ever made gaming consoles with the strict purpose of gaming with no uneeded features. They won't have all of that auxillary hardware like a blu-ray player.

No way.. but if true well I'll buy me a couple O.o. Can't imagine though it's almost the same price as a 3DS. I expect at least $299

That's never been Nintendo's philosophy, they don't like taking losses even if they have all the money in the world, but considering the first year of the 3DS maybe Nintendo's decided to take losses at launch for the first time ever

Then, of course, there is the fact that everything they have will not only be custom built but also be part of a special deal with the given companies so they won't pay nearly as much to manufacture them as it would cost for someone like me to buy it retail.

I can them maybe spending $90 on the GPU in the console out of their own pocket. The RAM is probably high quality so I will keep 20 for that. 30 and ship the controller. 30-40 for the CPU.

That would put costs from them at $190.

That seems unbelievably cheap. At that price, it'd fly off the shelves, literally. But it'd also be underpowered, greatly. I hope Nintendo have learnt from their Wii mistakes; the 3DS would suggest that is the step Nintendo are making...

The Wii won this gen even if all sells stop tomorrow. I still don't undestand where people get the idea that Nintendo made a mistake with the Wii. The only mistake was no providing enough high quality games on the console, not the power.

Ninty did just about as well as they could and yes not going with more power was a mistake becasue they missed out on a bunch of big 3rd party games because of it, they could have gone with a little more and they still would have been the cheapest on the market and still won. This caused a lot of people to have to buy secondary consoles or PC just to play the games they were missing out(GTA RDR, SF) on or play versions of games that werent complete crap compared to the HDs/PC version(COD, Spidey, NFS, etc.) and if you dont believe that wasnt a factor then you just need to look and see all the multiplat games that sold better on PS3 or 360 or both despite the WIi having much more consoles in the wild. But if all you care about is sales( and im sure you do) you wont get this anyway.

Again I don't hink it's likely, just saying it's in the realm of reality you know :) but considering the first year of the 3DS maybe Nintendo's decided to take losses at launch for the first time ever

no way will this be cheaper than the ps3 or xbox 360, unless they want to lose money on every console sold that is. its stronger, has more ram newer GPU and add to all that the cost of the tablet, logically its almost impossible of the WiiU is cheaper than the ps3/xbox 360

But why would they? It's a huge risk, and there ought to be plenty of demand for the Wii U even at a significantly higher price.

Remember, Sony were sitting on mountains of money from the PS1 and PS2 back in 2006, and look where loss leading got them then. It took three years to get themselves out of that hole.

You mean it took three years for them to start clawing their way out of the hole.

They're still in there.

Also this price seems critically unlikely.
