This is ironic, because 2D sidescrolling Mario is actually a cheap rip-off of Pit Fall.

Pit Fall is just a cheap ripoff of the olden days when people fell into actual pits for fun.

Ha! The videogame industry is just full of cheap, idea stealing whores!

I hear nintendo built the first pit in the world

Ratchet and Clank on PS2 had trophies, so Insomniac should sue Sony...errr.

Sony's defence would be that multiplats had Achievements on PC/360 versions and 3rd parties wanted to be able to use that functionality, which was already part of a game's design on PS3 to improve saleability of their games, so Sony put in place an optional trophy system because of demand. They made it sufficiently different to avoid legal infringements and let people implement or not. Then Sony discovered that games sell better with trophies because for some unknown reason gamers like trophy whoring, so they decided it's best for every game to have them. So Sony didn't copy, Sony was forced into adopting something they thought was fairly pointless.

And I agree, trophies / achievements are pretty pointless, even though I'm a bit of a trophy hound (but only mildly so) I wouldn't care if trophies / achievements never existed. I wouldn't even care if trophies / achievements became a thing of the past for next gen. But they won't.

It doesn't surprise me in the least that Sony copied one of Nintendo's ideas. After all, their company mantra is: "What Nintendo creates, we take."

Microsoft on the other hand is more famous for copying companies not named Nintendo, but it makes sense that Microsoft's biggest achievement (no pun intended) in the video game business (achievements) can be credited to copying Nintendo.

This has always bugged me. Why do people say "no pun intended" when it's clear that it was intented?

It actually draws attention to the pun. I might have missed it if it wasn't for the "no pun" sign ;D So people use it because they don't want other people to miss their funny jokes!

Ive got a feeling that the OP will somehow find '$' in the word apple... somehow.

Almost every single game has unlockables. Super Mario Bros. Deluxe was not even near unique from that perspective. The thing about achievements and trophies is that they are unified systems, connecting all your video game progress made on your profile. Something we had never seen before in console gaming.

Yep.  There's a reason they're called "Nintendo" (leave luck to the heavens); because they created time and space... even before existing themselves.

It's like they just keep on piling. It's atrocious.

The problem is Nintendo probably did not patent a method to hand out trophies for advancing through a game, or fulfilling additional optional conditions. Also, SquareEnix should sue everyone for using a class system inside their games.
