Forums - Nintendo - Sony files a patent for an accessory inspired by the concept video for the Wii U

Seems like it could be a great sniper style multiplayer device. Good for Sony and taking the initiative to patent it and get new things to all kinds of consumers.

The Wii U Zapper costs like 20 bucks with a game.  I don't see why Nintendo's Wii U zapper would be any more expensive than that.  It doesn't have any sort of added functionality, except for some simple mechanism to keep the Wii U gamepad in place.  It's essentially just a plastic shell.

Doesn't this one have built-in controls and motion sensing though? I can't see the Wiimote+nunchuck on the images. Add the fat gamepad to it and you have one ugly, cumbersome, expensive lightgun.

The GamePad has tilt and gyro sensors built into it already, so yeah, this version of the Zapper would pretty much just be a shell.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

saw this a month or so here on VGC so Sony is faster at copying than you think

They are so fast that it's Nintendo that's copying them.

And yet some how most people do not care who is copying who.

What's more upsetting to games. A company copying another or a company not copying another?

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

SONY should replace the S and the N with a C and a P.

Konami did this over a decade ago with it's arcade game Silent Scope. Glad to see they're both innovative enough to patent a 10 year old game design.

why shouldn't they if it's a good idea? i mean, if companies wouldn't do what others already did we would still only have one car company, one tv company and one phone company^^ ahh and only one console

Completely agree.

I don't care whether they are copying or not. If this thing works well for shooters and turns out to be very accurate, I want it for my Xbox as well!

We need less companies like Apple (suing the shit out of copying competitors (ironic, isn't it?)) and more competition.

Looks like it might be a sharpshooter with screen imbedded rather than a clip on extra / controller. But I don't think it's sufficiently different to the Wii U concept to be actiunably patentable. But who knows? If some aftermarket company makes a very similar thing to the Sony version then Sony suing / charging licensing is likely to be ahead of Nintendo suing / licensing because the Sony patent is more similar than the Nintendo patent.

So If Nintendo wanted to sue / license they would first have to go to court to invalidate the Sony patent.

Anyway, As with a lot of thing mimicking the Wii U game pad, it won't go anywhere on PS4 for the simple reason that only a proportion of PS4 owners will have Move and only a proportion of Move owners will want to buy a sharp shooter. So 3rd parties will generally not want to support the functionality in games that could use the functionality well. Whereas every Wii U owner will have a game pad so 3rd parties can safely put in the effort of implementing such functionality knowing it will be somewhat of a selling point.

On Wii U motion controll WILL be the method for playing FPS. But on PS4 the majority of FPS gamers will continue to use the (inferior for FPS) controller.
