I see this going around a lot.  The controllers are tethered so that people can't make off with them, and so the batteries don't die during a demo.  Not wired to the console at all, and never have been.

I had heard that but I really didn't watch too much of the video from E3 myself.  Good to hear, thanks.

Possibly, but I don't see why they would.  Timing between the pad and the TV isn't that critical to gameplay until a rhythm game comes along that will utilize such functionality.  I think at that time the specific software will come with that calibration.

This isn't really a problem or a strength for the Wii U, it is a sign of one of the trade-offs of modern big screen televisions. Here is a list of TV's I got from another forum (quick google search):

The list is a couple years old, but it demonstrates just how much latency your TV can introduce. To make matters worse, if you use a receiver to do all of your video/audio switching the receiver can introduce similar lag to these TVs. I ended up being "forced" to do a lot of this research last christmas to make Rocksmith playable because 100ms can make the difference from being successful in a game or not.

You've got 3 devices going at the same time with the wii u.  The first device is the console itself.  Its running software at whatever speed regardless of the TV its hooked up to or the gamepad.  Then you have the gamepad, which displays what the console software tells it to: not instantaneously, but as fast as it can relative to when the WiiU tells it to.  Then you have the TV, which the same setup as the controller, only its connected by a cable.  There is a base lag between when the software in the WiiU says to display something, and that something actually gets displayed on the fasted connected device.  In this case, its the controller.

So an event happens in the Wii U software, like say mario walking toward a pit.  He walks toward the pit at a constant speed internal to the wiiu regardless of what is being displayed when on the TV or controller.  He gets to the edge (where if he went even one pixel closer, he would fall) at time = 0.

At time = 0+base lag, the Wii U controller displays mario at the edge of the pit.  However, as far as the software is concerned, but the time you see mario at the edge of the pit he has already fallen into it because of the base lag.  This time interval is probably so small though that it wouldn't effect gameplay.

Now, at time = base lag + 116ms, the TV shows mario at the edge of the pit.  Except that as far as the software is concerned, he's already fallen in again.  He fell in 7-8 frames ago.  You hit your jump button expecting him to jump, but he falls in.

Controller lag is bad.  You want it as close as possible to the actual timing in the console itself.  Anyone who's played Rock Band or Guitar Hero on an LCD before calibration knows just how bad display lag can ruin your day.  Try adjusting your RB calibration by 100 ms and then try to play and see how hard you fail.

Fortunately, for most game genres a 100ms lag isn't going to ruin your experience.  You subconciously adjust to it since the only way you've ever played any particular game is with that 100ms lag built in.  But in this situation we have 2 different timings on 2 different displays.  So if you play on the TV most of the time and then switch to the gamepad, you're timing that you're used to will be off by a tenth of a second.  That's the difference between making that jump over the hole, or falling into it.

Well it wasn't directed at you ^^ just in general, but now i see, i still think that, anyway, 100ms are Imperceptible and you are not going to focus on both screens simultaneously, you'll either be playing in the gamepad or in the tv and the ''lag'' is just too small to affect your game even in such case that you ''get used'' to either one, and for the games that use the two screens is not going to be a problem because you'll still be doing a different thing on each screen and how you said we adapt to that specific thing at that specific reaction time. I still think that 100ms it's just too little to notice...



I noticed a little lag on the tv when I played Mario U with the GamePad at E3, but it barely even affects the gameplay. Heck it's not even noticable unless you really look at it closely. All in all, the GamePad is doing a good job streaming the video. 

Edit: Never mind. I slowed down my Mario u demo and it appears that the tv's and the gamepad's video stream are in-sync; no apparent lag at all. Video update soon.

This can be a serious damper on high level gameplay in the fighters genre, especially when it comes to frame-to-frame/buffering moves...

This is TV lag and is irrelevent to the console being played as it affects all consoles equally.  If it's not been a major issue so far this generation (where early LCD TV's had major lag) then it certainly isn't going to be a problem on next generation with most TV's having an improved display time.
