Forums - Sony - Was the PS2 really for Everyone?

at its height, the ps2 (with the gamecube, dreamcast and xbox released) had 90%+ of the US console market.

We wont see that type of domination again.

Which means if the pS2 had competition it wouldnt have sold what it sold. From the looks of it the 3DS may pull that percentage off on the Vita lol.

It wasn't. My sister was not really interested in the ps2, sure she would play burnout with us once in a while, but that was about it. She loved the Wii.

Your case is anecdotal, however (as are many stories here). Still, overall, it's hard to argue that the PS2 was the go-to console, and in many ways, much more than the Wii has been.

What is your point lol, the PS2 had no competition, the Wii created a buzz completely unheard of. the ps2 wasnt sold out for almost 3 years lol. It was the console gamers flocked to, not what the casuals flocked to. The Wii created an market the PS2 dominated a market that already existed so yes the Wii was more of a go to console than the PS2 could ever dream of.

PS2=2Pac: From the hardcore to the casual, everybody likes/respects it. Covered everything. It will NEVER die, even when people thin it's dead.

Wii=Justin Bieber: Insanely popular and people who actually like it are ashamed to admit that they like it. Won't have the longevity of the one that's already "dead".

You should ask yourself what longevity is? Is longevity selling for a long time in a single territory or selling well overtime because you are released in many different places making your sells look better compared to competitors which werent released in those territories.

From where I sit, the PS2 looks like it will have a longer total life span than the Wii will have.  I understand you are some sort of Nintendo fan.  You give me the impression that you're going to fight tooth and nail to defend Nintendo's honor.  That's cool.  I like that.  Just realize that you aren't going to win every argument.  Know which ones have a valid point and which ones can be disputed.

Good job PS2, and good job ignoring my question. Its long life span comes from being released in many more countries, its called common sense. You guys just overrate the hell out the PS2. Longer life span means what exactly lol?

I don't like Sony very much (Nintendo 4 Lyfe!) but I have to say, during the PS1/PS2 years, that's where the bulk of my gaming experiences took place. More than any console before, and any console since (IMHO), the PS2 was THE console for everybody. It had games for the hardcore, the casual, the JRPG fan, the person that wanted to try something totally off the wall (Gitaroo Man, Mr. Mosquito) --The PS2 just had everything covered.

I don't think we'll see anything like it, ever again. The PS2 was the first console that was almost required. If you had a TV, you had a PS2.

You guys are overestimating its sells greatly lol. Have you not seen the graphs showing the Wii and 360 are tracking better in the US. It sold so much because it had redesigns and has been released in many different countries. It is not the behemoth you guys want to believe it is. Might i also add that what the ps2 did in like 10 years the DS did in like 6 lol.

Quoted twice?  I'm honored!

So the Wii and 360 are tracking better in the U.S.?  I'll take your word for it.  I'm actually a big 360 fan, too.  Sony is (as stated before) my least favorite video game maker.  Doesn't change the fact that the PS2 did something amazing and still stands as the best selling console of all time.  Your ability to pick and choose which victories are the ones that matter and which ones you want to down play makes me question if you are an impartial source of info.  It's not the behemoth we want to believe it is?  Then what is it?

You quoted me.  I'm just sitting here watching Donnie Brasco on Netflix.  You asked me what longevity was.  I told you (or at least tried to imply) that it's selling for a longer amount of time.  The PS2 will have a longer life AND more sales than the Wii will when it's all said and done.  You can give excuses for this (ie: It was released in more territories) but in the end, it didn't do anything that Nintendo wasn't allowed to do.  Is releasing in more territories suddenly a bad thing?

And stop laughing out loud.  You're creeping me out.

Im sorry... What? The PS2 wasnt for everyone?

It had games of all genres for all ages. Its sold over 1.5 BILLION units of software, you think that was all for the "hardcore" crowd?

Looking at the top 100 selling games on PS2 I see Golf, Dancing, Sims, Football, WWE, Simpsons, EyeToy, Need for Speed, Crash Bandicoot, Madden...

Despite Wii Sports being bundled to hell... The top 200 PS2 games have sold 30 Million more than the top 200 Wii games. Another thing - The PS2 has 133 2 Million sellers. The Wii has 140 ONE MILLION sellers. The PS2 has 325(!!) ONE MILLION sellers.

To say the Wii had a more varied audience because some games sold 20-30+ Million is stupid, when the rest of the library is lagging far, far behind. Take a look at a "casual" genre - Sports. T

he Wii's top 200 sport games, including the 80 Million from Wii Sports - 267M.
The PS2s top 200 - 244M WITHOUT 65 Million bundled games. Next, lets take a look at a genre the Wii excels in.. Platformers.

The Wii has sold 80 Million platformers. Worth noting that over half of this number comes from 3 Mario games...
The PS2 has sold 77 Million platformers.

The Wii has sold 53 Million racing games.
The PS2 has sold over 157 Million racing games.

Party games really (misc, according to VGChartz) is the only genre where Wii destroyed the PS2. The Wii sold over 180 Million of them. 80 Million more than the PS2.

I could go into other genres. Fighters, Action, RPG, Shooters... But I really dont need to. The Wii numbers are pathetic in comparison, its pointless showing the 2 sets.

The PS2 matches the Wii in the "casual" market, and destroys it in the rest. The PS2s library pretty much destroys everything the videogame market's seen. Correct me if Im wrong, actually... But hasnt the PS2 sold more SW than the N64, Gamecube and Wii combined?

I could do exactly what you just did, but no need, you just proved the Ps2 is a failure lol and didnt prove it is for everyone at all.

1. the Ps2 had nearly every gaming company supporting them and yet the Wii still had more explosive sells with only ninty backing it. Ninty was able to do what sony and every 3rd party in the world did by themselves, that makes the Ps2 a failure if anything

2. How does it selling 1.5 billion games proof of casual gamers lol? It doesnt prove a thing, you named a bunch of games that arent even casual and added them all together.

3. Try again

You seem hell-bent (judging by the fact that you basically quoted the entire thread) on proving the PS2 wasn't anything special. I can dig that. However, the system did something no other console has. We can down-size it, make excuses, or accept it.

And what has it done that no one else has? Im dying to hear this so i can name things other consoles have done that it hasnt. Im not making excuses, im telling the truth about your precious Ps2. You just dont want to accept it got extremely lucky. If it didnt get lucky, why has no other Sony platform after it been even close to as successful as it.
