Forums - Gaming - If Sony made a sub $399 PS3 at launch- would it have outsold the PS2 and force MS out of gaming?

Dilemma: what would you rather have:

A dominating weaker PS3 w... 69 40.12%

The PS3 as it is now 103 59.88%

Total:172

Calling vgchartz numbers 'fabricated shartz numbers' is surely a banable offence...? (banable from vgchartz, i mean)

I feel like developers would of just developed all their games for the 360 the first couple years anyway... which, i'm not sure many core gamers would of bought into the "PSWii."

Also, there is the slight problem that the Move wasn't even around then.

Or rather, it was, but it wasn't anything like the released move.

It didn't get any wiimote type functionality until well after the Wii released.

So if it had the Move controller that was demoed....

it wouldn't of turned out well.

Ofcourse they would have, imagine you're back in 2006, everyone's crazy about da ps3. A 200 dollar less costing PS3 with Move would steal the thunder both from 360 and Wii launch.

People would have still been crazy about Halo 3, Gears of War, COD and Xbox Live.

Indeed. I don't think there's anything Sony could have done to put the Xbox out of business, even hypothetically. It already had exclusives, Xbox Live, and I think it guaranteed 3rd party support. In any scenario, it would still do at least 50m imo.

It behooves Sony to produce a well-balanced console, productively and financially. Modesty was key for PS2's success.

No. I think things would have ended up pretty much the same.

Yeah, I think if it wouldn't have Move at launch, it would be some sort of advanced PS Eye thing. I think even without the motion controls, a weaker PS3 would have outsold the Wii, if only barely. On 1 hand you have the new Wii and in the other hand you have the PS3 that cost a bit more but is a traditional console. PS3s misfortune was releasing in a time with a 249 and 399 console.

So a 399 PS3 would have sold as much as 599 ps3?

Pretty much. The PS3 didn't really have much reasons for a purchase until like 2008 and wasn't it already $399 by then? The 360 on the other hand had a ton of big games in 2007 and was definitely the more attractive console at the time.

Though if we're talking about a non-cell, non HD, PSeye based console...

Isn't that just the PS2, with the PSeye?

I mean, what differentiates this hypothetical console from the PS2?

I'm glad it ended up the way it did. Honestly, if forced Sony to focus on their games. Putting them in a better position for each gen forward. I'm glad the Move isn't the main focus of the console. And I can choose when to use it in most games. They may have lost a bit, but it's been better off for everyone. The only down side is the Nintendo fans constantly gloating over sales cause they have very little to else to talk about. All the game's where on the HD consoles.
