If Sony made a sub $399 PS3 at launch- would it have outsold the PS2 and force MS out of gaming?

Indeed. I don't think there's anything Sony could have done to put the Xbox out of business, even hypothetically. It already had exclusives, Xbox Live, and I think it guaranteed 3rd party support. In any scenario, it would still do at least 50m imo.
