Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Products Represent 70% of Entire Japanese Game Market ~ How do you feel about that number?

A survey conducted on a such short period of time is meaningless, especially with no big releases on Sony's systems. I look forward the same survey the week Tales of Xillia 2 releases.

If marketshare was calculated year to date it would still be heavily skewed toward Nintendo.  Of course, if you cherrypick one specific week when Xillia 2 releases, like the week in question here, the graph would skew in Sony's direction a bit.  The best metric is YTD and Nintendo would surely have the majority of the market.

Ahah very interesting reply my friend! I've just made some calculations on Sony (left) - Nintendo (right) market share in Japan.

HW  YTD 2012 33% - 67%

SW YTD 2012 44% - 53%

HW FY 2011 40% - 59%

SW FY 2011 53% - 43%

You'll agree that a full year or 12 sliding months are a fairer comparison, because it corrects seasonality. Well, in both cases, Sony wins on software (because PS3 has a strong sept. to dec. period). With games like ToX2 or RE6 to come, FY 2012 will surely be no different. But it's true that Sony can't catch up on hardware since Vita doesn't make up for the decline in PSP sales. Furthermore, Sony's systems and PS3/PSP/Vita games are more expensive than Nintendo's, so Sony might actually have the biggest share in value, but unfortunately I can't prove that.

Well, being VGchartz it's easy enough to check.  PSP should help out Sony a lot on the YTD though being a bit of a confounding variable looking foward.

http://www.vgchartz.com/yearly/2012/Japan/

Platform Yearly (change) Total
3DS 2,851,225 (-34%)
PS3 737,672 (-52%)
PSP 524,354 (-74%)
PSV 432,390 (-1%)
Wii 355,170 (-59%)
DS 53,386 (-92%)
X360 42,202 (-63%)
Total 4,996,399(-50%)

Nintendo marketshare for the Year - 65.2%

Sony Market Share - 33.9%

So, yeah, pretty heavy in Nintendo's favor, and not looking great for Sony considering the PSV doesn't seem to quite be the PSP to put it gently.

Not sure how they have 70% but they are doing well regardless

Japan Hardware by Platform
Platform Yearly (change) Total
3DS 4,312,326 (N/A) 4,312,326
PSP 2,029,757 (-30%) 18,603,972
PS3 1,521,847 (-2%) 7,662,294
Wii 875,543 (-47%) 12,212,595
DS 646,448 (-77%) 32,913,436
PSV 438,232 (-77%) 438,232
X360 114,959 (-46%) 1,558,023
Total 9,939,112 (+8%)

This was last year
Nintendo sold around 5.8 million consoles in Japan (3ds, ds and wii) which is 59%
Sony sold around 4 million consoles in Japan (psp, ps vita and ps3) which is 40%
Microsoft sold 115,000 xbox 360's! Just 1%!

Overall, for the generation 82.5 million consoles sold in Japan

Nintendo, sold 52.7 million consoles (63.9%) so that's a little less than what they were saying, according to vgchartz. Software is similiar, so Nintendo is quite dominant

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Without the 3DS, sony would have alot more market share. Nintendo and sony would probably be similiar when it comes to marketshare

Thanks to you, the2real, and Kasz for looking into the numbers.  So yeah, heavily skewed in Nintendo's favor.  Sony won software FY 2011 but even with RE6 and ToX2 coming out, I'm not sure that'll push them over Nintendo in terms of software with NSMB2 legging it out, Animal Crossing, and NSMBU on the horizon.

To tell you the truth I think the Wii U is more a western friendly console. Most of the games will be geared towards that and the 3DS will continue to thrive in Japan. I doubt most of the third parties will sell the best on the Wii U though.

I don't get your point... the 3DS is a product that will keep selling.

Unlike the PSP, which is falling off.

I'm waiting to see what the doomsayers have to say to this. It should be interesting.

NIntendo is having record success yet all I here is negativity.

As far as the 360 in Japan goes. Microsoft just does not know when to give up. They couldn't make that thing a hit in Japan even if they payed gamers to play it. They don't want it.

I think Microsoft has given up on Japan a long time ago, they are just still selling their initial shipment^^

Considering Nintendos mediocre success in the west: I think Nintendo doesn't really care about that right now since the exchange rates are most unfortunate for international business right now. I'm pretty sure Sony would love to trade positions and rather be super successful at home rather than overseas and having to worry about exchange rates all the time. It's true that Nintendo needs to step up in the west but there is no real incentive to do so right now. Their target is to get back to black right now and pushing europe or america is not really a viable strategy right now for them.

i agree ....the yen vs  $ is killing nintendo like most japanese company...
