Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Products Represent 70% of Entire Japanese Game Market ~ How do you feel about that number?

Out of the 3 big, Sony is the big loser (in financial perspective) and I would say, IN THE GAMING MARKET, Nintendo still is the big winner! Ppl claims that Nintendo has lost money and all that cheap talk but we have to realized that they are launching a new System at the end of the year and that obviously takes a lot of money! Other than that, I think Nintendo has a great opportunity to get a really solid userbase for both 3DS and WiiU and start that recover! In my opinion, out of the big 3, I would say Nintendo is the healthiest!

I find this number absurd.
It just goes to show what happens when third parties refuse to acknowledge the undisputed leader of a console generation: Their software becomes marginalized by first party offerings...

"Roughly 70 percent of all videogame software and hardware sales in Japan are for Nintendo platforms at present"

Considering the wording, I believe this includes third-party title sales on Nintendo platforms as well.

you're right, my bad. serves me right for skimming.

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

The time is ripe for the Wii U to take Japan in an iron grip. Nintendo has to make the most of this opportunity.

The Wii and DS are fading away so all this is attributable to the 3DS. Nintendo should have a monstrous holiday season in Japan.

I have to say that the Wii has done a hell of a job this past year in Japan for being a mostly dead console. Little surprises here and there in the West as well from time to time.

I think the Wii is going to surprise some folks this holiday season.

Nintendo doesn't stray from what their market wants. This will always help them. Sony needs to understand this in order to not let Japan slip from their grasp. They already have an advantage just by being Japanese.

Too late for that.

I'm waiting to see what the doomsayers have to say to this. It should be interesting.

NIntendo is having record success yet all I here is negativity.

As far as the 360 in Japan goes. Microsoft just does not know when to give up. They couldn't make that thing a hit in Japan even if they payed gamers to play it. They don't want it.

I think Microsoft has given up on Japan a long time ago, they are just still selling their initial shipment^^

Considering Nintendos mediocre success in the west: I think Nintendo doesn't really care about that right now since the exchange rates are most unfortunate for international business right now. I'm pretty sure Sony would love to trade positions and rather be super successful at home rather than overseas and having to worry about exchange rates all the time. It's true that Nintendo needs to step up in the west but there is no real incentive to do so right now. Their target is to get back to black right now and pushing europe or america is not really a viable strategy right now for them.

Mediocre? Nintendo had more success in the west than anywhere else. It has only been since they announced the Wii U and stopped putting effort into the Wii that their sells have slipped over here.

Even with their own lack of support, they have still held the majority of top 10 and number 1 games with hardly a break.

Heck, just go to the front page and look at the sales charts. Look at the sells of multi plats like Skylanders and Lego Batman 2. Nintendo is still making a killing.

Just to add to that though, the 3DS is establishing itself as a platform where 3rd parties can thrive.

I think things will improve even more - with the massification of 3DS and Wii U release. Unless there's a mass Vita surge, PSP is on its way and PS3, while still has some life in it, is past its best days.

Too bad it's only japan, though.

TBH that is basically due to 3DS... X360 and DS are as good as dead, while PS3/P/V and the Wii are all selling like secondary consoles.

Of course given what's happening to the Vita, Microsofts failure to gain traction and there not being any promise of PS4 yet gaming in Japan is going to remain Nintendo centric for well over a year. Unless there is a PSV redesign or massive price-cut Nintendo is going to keep around 70% of the market till Wii U, then probably 80%+ for 2013... it'll be like 2007/8 again.

uh oh
do you know what you just did?!?!?!?!
