Yeah they did... but were the servers poorly handled or was it too much traffic? We don't know yet.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if standard 3DS sales are more than 40k from the software boost since the 3DS XL is not an improvement over the standard model, it's just a preference to some consumers.

On another note, I predicted my numbers based on the DS/ Wii games. Never knew they had longer on sale.

This is incomplete; I want to know how much the normal 3DS sold as well. I mean, if it also received a boost thanks to Mario, we're looking at a potential 250k for the week in Japan. Also, isn't it about time Nintendo started telling us how well Mario's doing digitally so that we have the complete picture here? Unless they intend to wait for their next quarterly announcement for that.
As things stand, NSMB2 feels a bit underwhelming, but given Nintendo's digital push and the fact that it had two fewer days of availability than its prequels, this could be pretty decent.
