What impact will the PS3 redesign/price cut have?

It will still decline YoY 23 20.54%

It will be flat YoY 23 20.54%

It will reach 2010 levels 26 23.21%

It will reach 2009 levels 17 15.18%

It will be above 2009 levels 23 20.54%

Total:112

After thinking a bit, even if Sony expect to sell 13m units that would already be quite a leap.

It sold 14.1m last fiscal year and it's currently 12% down YoY. That would mean ending the year at 12.4m. Add WiiU launch and last year's cut (which will reflect on the YoY decline later this year) to the mix and it'd probably end at less than 12m.

So Sony are expecting this to move over a million extra units in the next months. That would still be impressive, it's just that it's hard to fight the current YoY declines. With those it's impossible to lift sales to previous years' levels.

I don't know about you guys, but when PS3 had that short week or so period at $200 the thing was flying off the shelves.

Nobody here can sit here and say they know what will happen if PS3 goes sub $200. We will have to just wait and see.

That's the effect of a temporal offer, people on the verge of buying a product decide to buy asap to do it cheaper than they would buy later. If they reduce PS3 cost to under 200 US$, more people will buy it than at 250 US$, but it won't have the same effect during a long time than the effect on sales a 50 US$ discount has during only a week.

If the new 16GB PS3 is indeed $179 then we are talking about a $70 cut, which would probably have some sort of lasting effect. More so if it bundles some games.

Nobody knows yet what effect we will see with the PS3 having it's first entry level SKU priced at that level.

I just feel like it is being underestimated, much like when the redesign came and the price dropped back in 2009. Plus it is coming with some new IPs and some nice comebacks for series like Sly.

Should hopefully spark some interest in the forums come Holiday season.

I'm not saying that it won't have a lasting effect, it's sure that it will sell better than without the price cut, but it won't have the same effect during months than a temporal price cut during only a week. We saw it last black Friday week, when the retailers undercut themselves and destroyed the sales of December, with those huge deals. When you have temporal deals you sell lots of hardware on a very short period of time, if you do a price cut, some people that wasn't decided to buy it do, but not everyone on the first week, but on a long period of time. That's why PS3 won't have a sustained 50% increase on sales, much less a 200 to 300% sustained increase as some guys are saying on this same thread. That increase is totally unreasonable, even for a console that does everything.

If anyone was expecting a 200%-300% sustained increase that is just insane.

Other than that I understand what you mean. Black Friday week in itself is big enough. I just think that finally being at such a low price could provide a big impact when it comes to holiday shoppers, especially if the rumored prices are true, which now seems to be a possible $150 or so for the low end 16GB model.

Sony could have lowered their expected sales of the PS3 so they have a chance to exceed those expectations and make the PS3 appear to be more lively late in its life.

However, 13 million is still a great number for a system hitting 6 to 7 years old this fiscal year though.

oh so now the gap was once 8.4 huh? i thought "the gap was never even above 8 let alone 9". theres your incorrect fact. there really is no point with you when it comes to sony, is there?

oh for god sake.

it was 8.4, but if you look historically now it NEVER WAS above 8.  In other words the gap being above 8 was an illusion due to incorrect tracking.  The adjustments made it thus.

I'll make this really really easy for you:

If you think you had $5 in your pocket but when you checked you only actually had $3.... you never really had that $5 did you?

get it?

ok, fuck 2009. lets talk about this year. how much do you think ps3 will sell first 7 days after price cut with the current rumoured prices in all 3 regions. i say 300k+

It will spike immediately, but then AT BEST match previous Q4 sales. More than likely it will still be a YoY decrease for the Q4 and year overall.

The market is essentially saturated between them all and will only continue to shrink. Plus, with WiiU launching and the interest peaked for other new consoles... its only real benefit is allowing Sony to go from a 12% decline to maybe a 10% for the year while reducing the cost of the consoles and possibly increasing the margin per unit.

^ how much do you think it'll spike though?

It kinda depends on when it launches.

If it launches well before October, then about double what it is doing now. If it launches withing Q4, it could be at par with what it did last year.

Sound about right.

300k would be a decent figure if it is to show a sustained boost. Less than that and its not great for the long term.

Now you answer mine

Last calendar year (jan - dec) they sold 14.14m (VGC) and shipped 14.10m (Sony)

this year (jan to dec) you predict?

to be honest, i have no idea. with the wii u releasing, anything can happen.there may also be an x360 price cut, who knows?  i dont think they can beat that 14.10m, so somewhere below that. how much have the 3 consoles sold so far this calendar year?
