YoY decline is certain because Sony themselves are targeting 13 million PS3s for FY 2013 (which is from April 2012 to March 2013).

Weren't they targetting 14m?

Edit: No, you're right, they're targetting 13m.

Yep Slimebeast they are going for 2009 type sells, which means PS4 is coming.

I recognize the 14 mill number from somewhere too (from a distant past?) but apparently last year they targeted 15 mill and this FY 13 mill.

@Slimebeast Was it adjusted down?

dont think it'll do much, what exclusive SW does it have again?

but its a bit early to tell now, if the redesign adds features and improvements to the HW like the 360s did then it might have a better chance

i dont see it posting new highs but also not selling much less than it did since 09, now if one of these games TLOU, TLG, GOW4, or GTA5 release this winter along with ps2 B/C than the story would be different unfortunately none of these things will happen

If they decide for a price cut, they should do it as soon as possible since the PS4 will most likely be announced at next year E3, that way they can squeeze a lot of money from it before the new console steals the spotlight of the PS3. Considering how good the system is selling if they released a new design with a price cut, the thing will explode in sales, probably even surpassing the 3DS by a whole lot.

It's going to push it extremely higher than what it would do without it.

I like the redesign.  It may seem unorthodox to many who see it for the first time with the sliding tray.  Maybe other people will like it better when they see it in stores.  If it has a price cut this year I would imagine that the late adopters in the United States would boost sales.  People are tight with their money right now, so I would say a safe number would be 11 to 12 million units sold worldwide.

Japan is another beast altogether.  I would go higher with my estimate if that market wasn't so console averse this generation.  The best market will probably be Europe as it is now (unless the new design is hated more than a price drop).  I've never seen this industry have so many twists and turns.  If this were NEC or Sega I would think the PS3 would have been replaced 4 years ago.  I'm glad they stayed with it since I enjoy my PS3.

I don't know if it will boost yearly sales beyond some of the previous highest milestones, but it should at least slow their natural decline and extend console life (obviously this needs SW too to work, but a user base that's already quite large and renewed HW should work well enough to keep on attracting devs). Surely next gen consoles will dominate the high end of the market, but the low end will still be this gen's turf for some years.
