Forums - Nintendo - Is New Super Mario Bros. U a Wii U launch title or not? Will that be bad news for the Wii U?

The trouble with NSMBU is that it looks so, so very similiar to the previous three games in the series. Even the theme music is identical. The art style hasn't changed at all. The level design looks the same, just with more things going on due to the horsepower.

Not saying it won't be a big seller, and I'm certainly not saying that it won't turn out to be a classic. What I am saying is that on it's face, that game does not differentiate itself enough from previous games in the 'NSMB' line, and I can't be the only person who is skeptical of paying $59.99 for more of the same. NSMBWii was not all that great of a game.

NSMB2 looks really good, but only because of the clever "collect 1,000,000 coins" theme and the raccoon tail that appeals to the NES fanboy nostalgia. NSMBU does not have that same appeal, and it's supposed to be a system seller?

Wrong. The theme is not the same as the 3 other games.

Do tell.  What is the theme?

This is the real theme. I heard it often while they were playing offscreen at the booth.

Are you messing with me or something?  Because there is one new song in the game you've heard?  I'm not talking about the music, I'm talking about the theme of the game.  As in, game theme.  What differentiates it, what will make people want to buy it.  How it evolves the formula.

Like most of you said, if the WiiU comes out in Nov, let the third party games be the forefront than finish it off with Mario in the christmas bash! That's how I would do.

No, this is not going to work, they tried that with 3DS and look how well that turned out. If they want to move consoles out the gate, they need Mario or something equivalent to Wii Sports/Fit. Rayman aint gonna do it, AC3, isnt going to do it. ports of games that have been out for months or even a whole year, sure as hell aint gonna do it

Well Nintendo Land probably isn't going to be Wii Sports, but it'll likely be pretty huge on its own. I mean the Mario Party games clean up, why not this?

Secondly you're talking about a few weeks after launch, not months like the 3DS in terms of waiting for Mario 3D Land to show up.

Third the 3DS had a port of Super Street Fighter IV as its big third party game. The Wii U potentially has Assassin's Creed 3 (new game), Rayman (new game), Zombi U (new game), and possibly Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (biggest release of the year).

That's a pretty freaking big difference. Throw in Pikmin 3 (Pikmin 3 could use some space too, Mario is going to cannibalize its sales) and really, that's a pretty large launch. You still even have casual stuff too with Sing and Just Dance 4 on top of Nintendo Land.

Mario at launch on top of all that is quite honestly overkill. The first shipment is going to sell out, let third parties have more of the cake. As long as Mario is in by early December, this is nothing like the 3DS launch at all.

The equivalent to the 3DS would be if the 3DS launched with Resident Evil Revelations, Monster Hunter Tri G, Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, and Super Street Fighter IV, with Super Mario 3D Land showing up 4 weeks later. That clearly was not the 3DS launch.

Release Wii U on November 4th, then drop NSMBU on Nov. 25th...

It can survive 3 weeks without a Mario game. Either way, the console has to be out 10+ before Black Friday...it would be stupid to miss that 'holiday's' sales potential.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

Yeah I think launching earlier in November, maybe even at the end of October would be the best way to go.

NSMB U for Nov. 25th is perfect, that would be right ahead of Black Friday.

That also gives Nintendo time to re-stock inventory for Black Friday sales.

When you think about launching on Black Friday is a waste, because the launch crazies will snap up all your systems anyway, so you're getting little/no benefit from the Black Friday shoppers rush.

...? You said theme music, I proved you wrong about it. In bold.

I'd imagine, as others have said, it'll be there day 1.

Never saw the hate for Nintendo's conference. It did what people wanted, but it wasn't enough???

cant speak for anyone else, but we didnt get any specs or very little on the online components, which is what i was most looking forward too.

Nintendo never ever release specs though, and all the online stuff came the day before. E3 is supposed to be about the games, and yet, when Nintendo did show all games, people were unhappy. I don't see the problem.

they released them for GC, and what online stuff did you hear about?? I still would have liked for them to do it or at least address how powerful it would be. as for online, the only thing i got was Ninty land. What about friend codes?, acheivements, multiple accounts? cloud saving, cross game chat?, video chat?, we got no info on any of those. As for the games, i saw was alot of ports and a few originals, nothing in that line up got me excited, not a bad lineup but the games that interested me the most i already played or i could play, right now. So no, E3 didnt do what I wanted, thats just me

I'm unaware they released them, but if they did, my apologies.

The online stuff was detailed in a pre-conference. It showed off the Miiverse, which is always online. It showed mobile phone connectivity. It confirmed video chat also. And new features, like 'forums' where you can discuss a certain game with anyone on the system, and post messages that will appear on anyone's WiiU homescreen. Also, it showed off other features, like the ability for messages to come up in-game. The example shown was the homescreen for NSMBU, where certain levels were warned about, and hints could be seen if you'd like. Finally, Friend codes were confirmed, but they are now changable and much simpler. I'd imagine a word or so, but I don't know. However, I don't recall seeing anything about multiple accounts or cloud saving, and 'accomplishments' were mentioned, but not confirmed.

And the games? Have you seen the lineup for the PS3 and 360 at launch? All ports, or yearly sequels for the most part. And not very good ports either. So if the Wii can have ZombiU, Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends, NSMBU and Nintendo Land, to name a few exclusives set for the system's launch, as well as all of the 3rd party ports seen (which I'm not interested in), and I'd suggest you're looking at a mighty fine launch for the system.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I have seen them and i thought they were crappy as well, dont know what those two have to do with Wii U, strange you brought them up. Dont care about ZombiU, never cared for Pikmin, Rayman is ok, dont care about another NSMB(especially when the 3ds one looks better), really dont careiabout NintyLand looks like a better version of Home, which i used all but once(its not bad, just not for me) The only games i am interested in are the 3rd party ports which i can get for the platforms i already own, so the launch isnt doing anything for me. (not saying its bad)

Nintendo releases games when they deemed the time is right.

Nintendo's website tells alot more than i expexted it to do, Mario and Nintendoland are looking to lead the way since those games have "holiday 2012". Wii Fit U and Pikmin 3 have launch window. So maybe we are looking at a November release with Mario early December. Wii Fit U January for New Years resolution season or Febuary for i guess a good Valentines present. Pikmin maybe Feburary or March to end the fiscal year. Next fiscal we will probably see Mario Kart U, WiiU Sports, and Retro's project; that sounds like a killer year actually. 2014-2015 fiscal year is looking like the Vitality sensor game(I know its coming, it surely cant take this long), Smash brothers, Monoliths project, Zelda(its gonna be so pretty). That would probably be the year of the core for Ninty.
