FCC filings show new model PS3 4000 in the works, drawings of where labels will go shows that the new model is definatley a new shape, and presuming the label is the same size would suggest its much smaller too. 

Will it land in time for xmas with a lower price tag? Would be a good attempt to steal some Wii U thunder. 

Can we expect a reveal at Games Con next month?

As Sony never called the current PS3 model "slim" I do think that they will release a "slim" version, maybe even this holiday.

But I wouldn't expect to see it announced at the Gamescom, because it wasn't even sure Sony would attend it until some weeks ago. Such a big announcement (and likely a market start same day/same week) is planned month in advance, so Sony's reserved attitude makes me doubt they planned it for GC.

Then again it could have perhaps been a strategy to bargain for the lowest prices as there were indications that Nintendo and MS wouldn't attend, putting pressure on the convention management to atleast secure Sony's presence.

Could Sony be planning to sabotage the Wii U launch with new PS3 model that is sleeker and cheaper and has tons more awesome games already?

Nintendo definitely sabotaged the PS-Vita launch in Japan by releasing Mario and Monster Hunter and all kinds of stuff that keeps selling tons in Japan while the PS-Vita lost momentum and shows no signs of recovering.

now I am torn.

I wanted to upgrade my PS3 to the current slim model lol.

Not sure if this newer smaller one will cut important items out.

People thought Sony were going to do this for a while, the newer even slimmer PS3 will mean they can take that extra $50 off it and help sabotage the Wii-U launch (seriously, imagine if Sony released this the day before the Wii-U launch xD).

would make sense.  anything they can do to keep the spotlight away from a competitor would be good for them.

Sony expects to sell 13m units this year compared to last year's 14m. So far they're 10.8% down YoY so they're slightly behind their prediction.

If they were planning this they're not expecting it to move that many unit so they may not bring a price cut with it. Either that, VGC is wrong, the slim's not coming this year or they were underestimating PS3 sales until Xmas.

It'd be the perfect strategy, release it right before the Wii-U releases and Microsoft announces there next gen console. Slap a cheaper price tag and the PS3 could easily be the highest selling home console this holiday.
