To kill Halo the following criteria must be met:
1. Be a 90+ metacritic score.
2. Can only be a PS3 exclusive (since PS3 is 360s main rival and you can only fight an exclusive with another exclusive).
3. Must match or surpass the sales of the last major Halo release.
4. Gain as much pop culture status or surpass Halo in this regard.
It seems to be that number 3 and 4 are the tricky ones. Hence Halo is still alive and well :).
Nowadays, COD is the king. And COD comes out every year so i have to hear the damn press talk about it everytime a new one is announced and showed. and After MW2(which I didn't like too much) the devs stopped giving a crap and are now just releasing them for the heck of it. And instead of Devs trying things different to conteract Cod, they just try and copy them. We see COD clones instead of different types of games because it is too "risky" to release something unique.
This bit stood out to me. Are you complaining that there is a Yearly CoD? There's been a Yearly Halo since 2009. 2009 had TWO Halo games. Theres going to be a Halo this Year and Halo Anniversary 2 is highly rumored for next Year.
Halo wont be "killed" as long as Microsoft keep pumping out quality games Yearly.

Why is that a must?
There's grounds to argue that COD took over Halo but that isn't exclusive.

Sure if your talking in pure sales but it isnt the parallel to what Halo is. Halo represents the Xbox brand. So surely its "killer" must represent the competition aka the PS3.
Depends on who you talk to I guess

When was that? The PS1 era?
Honestly, I prefer COD being "king" based solely on the fact that I now have to hear fewer people pretend Halo had some brilliant mythology and storyline. At least COD fans don't pretend to care about the story.
For the record, I love the Halo games, the MP was extremely fun. But every time someone starts talking about the storyline my teeth start to ache.
