Forums - Nintendo - "Lest they forget." Iwata speaks out.

As I Nintendo fan (but gamer of all consoles), i do agree that the most likely outcome will be less sales, from what we have seen so far.

However I think Nintendo does not care about sales records, because if they did they could have supported the Wii better and carried it past PS2.

All Nintendo care is about profit. Remember gamecube sold like what 25 million consoles? and it made more profit (not revenue) than Sony did on PS2.

I think Nintendo's strategy is simple,

1. Make profit

2.  Brand rebuilding by capturing the next generation of future gamers. (NOTE: too late to regain all the old fans who have moved on)

i.e. Use Nintendo Land as advertisement tool to capture young kids to like mario, zelda, starfox, metroid etc.. so when they grow up at least majority of these kids for the next generation or two, will want to play the flagship Nintendo  franchises before moving onto another console for the 3rd party variety.

If Nintendo play their cards right and can recapture 3rd party support and create mature new IPS, it may prevent them from moving on to another console before  these kids grow up into young adults.

BONUS:

3. Sell lots = icing on the cake for them.

Clap clap clap clap clap all really great points, some I never even thought of myself.

But anyone who says "but N64/GC had Mario too!" doesn't get what we're talking about. NSMBU is the 2nd biggest launch killer-app for a console since Super Mario World, 20 years ago.

Third, actually. You forgot Wii Sports - because let's admit it, that was a true killer-app.

But it is true, NSMBU has the potential to drive Wii U sales out of the gate about as fast as Wii Sports did. It's no accident or coincidence that both previous NSMB titles have sold over 25 million copies. Coupled with NintendoLand, there's serious potential. They just need to make sure there's a new Wii U Sports before sales start to taper off, and they're pretty much guaranteed better sales than any previous Nintendo console other than the Wii. Whether it can reach or surpass the Wii will depend on more than just that, though.

I don't know, the Wii had some pretty massive hype in the months leading up to it's release. I'm just not getting that from the WiiU.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

The months leading up to its release, meaning, September-November.

Try finding signs of significant hype from July 2006.

Iwata is right in saying that many people critics were stating that the Wii was going to be the final nail in Nintendo's coffin. They were not a all saying how it was going to be revolutionary or anything like that. Gamespot made a sarcastic and infamous April Fool's joke about how the Wii was going to dominate and why and ironically it turned out to be prophetic.

The thing is though that the Wii U is not the Wii and the odds are that it won't be as successful.

What do you think the final total will be around?  60+ million?  I believe it can push at least 60-70.

You know, if the Wii U wasn't such a threat to Microsoft and Sony then why are they constantly making retorts about the Wii U that subtly make it seem less appealing? Sony does it, Microsoft just did it not too long ago. I think the Wii U is definitely a threat.

My angle on that front is to look at what MS is saying - specifically, where they say something along the lines of "It looks like it's comparable to the Xbox 360"... which is very high praise from a competitor. If they're willing to say it's around the same power/capabilities, then it's probably quite a bit more than that. If it really was around the same power as the 360, then they'd have said something like "it looks like a pale imitation of the 360, and releasing 7 years too late". But they can't really convince people of that, based on the evidence.

There's really no doubt whatsoever that, at the very minimum, MS and Sony are wary of it. They were dismissive of the Wii, and they know where that got them. This is now a system that could severely eat into the remaining lives of their current consoles, and potentially compete well against their next consoles (after all, the Wii did pretty damn well against their current ones, so even without the higher power, they've clearly got an edge of some sort).

Why do you (not you, MDMAlliance, I'm using "you" rhetorically) think that, suddenly, both of them have started saying things like "We won't release a new console until we can produce a significant boost to power over the current generation"? After all, it's been 7 years since the 360 released, and 6 years since the PS3 released, you'd think they could get a pretty strong boost to power in that time. Those statements are clearly trying to minimise the impact of the Wii U, which means that it is having an impact, or they fear that it will, at least.

Good question.  I will guess that the console should sell about 75 million, but keep in mind that my predictions are approximately as accurate as Dwight Howard's free throws.
