Since you're the one who knows a bit more about these parts than me, forgive me for the off-topic, if you could go with two GTX 670s or one 690, which would you buy?

Isn't the 690 tehcnically two 680s?  But I guess two 670s would be cheaper.

Technically. I wouldn't mind the cheaper option, of course, but the technically best option would be ideal. :)

2X670's with some slight overclocking would give you about same processing power as a single 690 as well as save you 200 bucks. However they would increase your power usage as well.

Here is an interesting article you whould check out -

http://www.theverge.com/2012/7/3/3076197/geforce-gtx-680-radeon-hd-7970-graphics-card-upgrade

If you are gaming on a single monitor, there is absolutely no need to get a GTX690 (or even a 680). Something like a GTX 570 or a Radeon 6970 should serve you for very well at 1080p for many years to come.

I personally have moved away from my rediculous 3 monitor setups and dual 580 SLI rig.

Hmmm...So two (or even one) 670 would suffice?

Yeah one 670 would be plenty right now and you can always add a second one in a few years when they are on clearance for 199. ;)

Noted. Appreciate the feedback! :)

However if you have money to burn though and plan on gaming on 3 monitors (5760x1080) and in 3D surround...GTX690 SLI all the way!

http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/41581-nvidia-geforce-gtx-690-sli-surround/

Once they release 3D 1080p projectors that can actually do gaming in 1080p (doesn't exist right now) I may want to set up a 3D surround setup using 3 projectors. I can't stand the bezels when gaming on 3 monitors...

Just found a new contender for a case...

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/cooler-master-pc-case-mini-itx,16201.html

This kind of changes everything. If I can do a full PSU and a GTX 690 in such small form factor with a mITX board, I may need an i7 afterall. :)

I'm going to SLI the 690 (what I've decided to go with) when Crysis 3 releases.

Being the tech savvy guy you are, I'm sure you understand!

I understand that you are INSANE! And have far too much money lol.

But seriously I would suggest reading this before you decide on that

Personally I don't think the extra cost, power drain, heat, and noise is worth the performance gains. But that is just me. Personally i would spend the money on a a couple of SSDs and raid them for ultimate performance.

I have to agree the cost/perform is way out of whack on those. if you going to spluge a 512 m4 crucial ssd go  for 350-400 right now... buy your self 3 680 or if your really going to drop the cash on sli prior series muti gpu configs found that 2 had issues with micro stutter  but generally gave a great boost (one 690) where 3 fixed almost all of it and gave a small performance gain while 4 (two 690 is really a 4 way sli) gave no statistical benifit over 3. also the 690 are hella over priced this gen

Once you relise he told me he only plans to use one 1080p monitor, it seems even more insane. I have told him a couple times at that resolution a GTX680 is more than enough or any game out today max settings 60fps. He seems to be commited to going all out on his first PC tho. And at the end of the day it's his money. Personally the fact that not all games have SLI profiles, the poor scaling in some games (and less than 90% in many), plus microstuttering, increased heat/Power consumption etc is enough reason to stay away from SLI alltogether. Then again I thought my 560 TI was expensive lol.

Unless I had the money/space for a tripple monitor, or a 3D monitor, in those situations SLI makes sense.

Yeah I gave in and I picked up a shuttle PC. It's so adorable...

http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=66928&promoid=1360

As for the internals, I picked up a 2500K and GTX 580. Inz a z68 board so sandy bridge and Fermi PCIE 2.0 are the best match for it.

This is the card I got - http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=67644&promoid=1257

I got a bluray drive in there, Dual Sata III SSD's in RAID 0. It can do some damage and its tiny...
