That's the power supply. At least in PS3 slim systems that's the exact location of the supply, and same shape. Seems like they just remolded the outside plastic to make the power supply external, then painted it red.

Nice.

I'd like to see a version with all the components covered, so there's no outer shell at all, just a completely stripped away "inside the engine" appearance as others mentioned.
