Okay now this topic may seem kinda strange , because this isn't really a gaming discussion, but rather a story of a part of my life, that i simply want to share with you guys. (i am kinda moved right now, and proud about what a certain person in my life has achieved so far)
Okay now, my little Brother, currently 14 Years old, is suffering epilepsy, and he's mentally handicapped. While i wouldn't dare to call him.. well.. "stupid", he has a different way of thinking, and he's very naive on top of that.
I remember some Years ago, the Doc's said that it would be an extremely hard task to properly develop everyday skills, like reading and writing, and not so long ago, this seemed to come true. until like his 11-12th Year of age, he could barely read words, leave alone understanding them. He had a nice little hobby though - he loved to play games. And since i am his older brother, i have probably influenced his tastes a bit, because everytime we met each other, i was telling him about the rpgs i play, and when i had the time we sat together for hours on end, playing them. Since he didn't understand anything, i had to read the subtitles (nah, no german Dub for most of the games beeing released
) for him to kinda understand whats going on.
Problem is that he wanted to play RPGs on his own, and he wanted me to read stuff for him, while he's playing the games himself. And as any human being on this planet, i simply didnt have the time (even though i had a lot of time some years ago, but still...) and patience to sit down 4 hours, reading text.
So yeah, he ended up completely lost more often than not, and while i always helped him out in the end, i didnt try to act as if this would be any fun to me. (I am an asshole, i know) So yeah, up to his 12th~ birthday, his reading sucked, and understanding text was pretty much close to impossible, and now, 2~ Years later, he is actually chatting with other people in Minecraft., with better grammar than most of of the guys of his age, and playing mammoth RPGs on his own without breaking a sweat. (he sometimes is too lazy to read bigger chunks of Quest-descriptions and eventually ends up lost sometimes, asking me to help him out.. but i always tell that little slacker to help himself, browsing answers for where he needs help in the games he's currently playing on Youtube or Google, and what can i say... doing it is amazingly easy to him., again, he's just extremely lazy)
i actually didnt notice that he improved THAT MUCH in just 2 Years (again, keep in mind that he's handicapped, and not just a little bit), and while he has problems paying attention in school (for Disabled), he can read and understand text properly, and nowadays we can even watch subbed anime together, where he does not have the time to read until he presses a button, but instead needs to rush it in order to keep up with the talking Voice.
Oh and i only noticed all of this today because my mom told me the mother of a friend (/classmate) of my brother just recently told her that she considers buying a huge chunk of Games (rpg's, since they have a lot of text) for her son, in order to try if his reading improves when he has fun while doing so, because she was so impressed by my little brother when he visited them some days ago...
so yeah, thank you gaming, for being a form of entertainment that is not only fun, but also one heck of a teacher to the brother i honestly love with all my heart.
And thanks to all that actually play games (and read this wall of text).
