Considering the price it does sound like they're targeting the business sector more than the consumer market that the iPad currently reigns over. My guess is they hope that it'll eventually improve the uptake of consumer Windows based tablets due to app comparability. I'm not sure how well this will work for them, especially with Google and Android offering further competition.

What price?

And another question. Does Apple really make their own CPUs?

Apparently the cheapest will be $600 with the more expensive Intel based tablets nearer $800.

Was that an educated guess by a professional analyst or a wild guess by a random blogger?

If it's $600 it's dead. At least dead for the common user market.

Im not 100% sure of the pad prices from other makers but it's something like this, right?

iPad  $600
Android (Samsung, Asus, Sony etc) $400

Depending on configurations of course but roughly. (dunno if those prices I listed allows for 3G and 4G though. But all pads have internet, don't they?)

The 16GB WiFi iPad 3 is $499. I don't know if it was an inventory clearing sale or if iPad 2 production has ceased, but Apple was selling the iPad 2 16GB WiFi for $399, still at a profit.

So it's a fair guess to assume MS will take their 16GB Surface RT WiFi tablet and sell it at the same $499.

Sure, they could go lower at $399, but the question is whether they're trying to generate profit or simply steal marketshare which could backfire if they continually have to sell their tablets at lower margins than the competition (Apple).

Worse, if they don't steal significant marketshare from both Android and iOS if users don't unanimously update their PCs to Windows 8 and now MS is saddled with a marginally selling product line generating marginal profits per unit, completely ignoring whatever R&D and marketing costs went into the product line.

It'll be interesting to see how the consumer reacts anyway.

I have seen the cost guess for the Surface RT. I think Digitimes are nuts if they think the Surface RT is going to sell for more than $600. I need to ask why would it? What could Apple be doing to keep the iPad 3 price at $500 and MS couldn't sell the Surface RT for $500. Apple is know for high margins on there products. Like Apple and the iPad, MS is building the Surface RT. Makes no sense. MS can afford lower margin.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Isn't it a bit early to talk about the substance of the Surface?

You forgot in 1993 Apple introduced the Newton. No one cared.

Actually, the Newton was a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant).  The first real tablet computer was 1989's GRiDpad:

The GridPAD was so successful that it paved the way for the Palm Pilot, the Newton, and today's modern tablet computers.

surface has to be a hit! why? because many people start to hate it even before it is released. everything which get's a lot of hate is a huge hit.

iphones
ipads
justin bieber
fast food
cod

something which is a huge hit and doesn't get a lot of hate:

...

Everyone loved Inception and it was a huge hit. Everyone loved Toy Story 3 and it was a big hit. Everybody loves staplers and they were a big hit.

It's hilarious the hate Non apple companies get when they try and get one up on them. As people have said, if this was IPAD 4, it would be the usual circle jerk amongst the media.

Reminded me of this gif.

That's hilarious but the dude on the left is doing it wrong. Unless of course his cock is sideways.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

That's all that comes to mind, really.

The newton was a pocket PC, a small slice of PC if you would like, something that was designed for business oriented people, and nothing else. The full, PC OS tablet was MSs idea, and not Apples The truth is that every day I test on iPads I come to the same conclusion: why did they make this? Whats the point of it, when its NOTHING out of box, and most Apps are garbage at best...

Changing the size doesn't create a whole new concept. Anyhow, as Adinnieken pointed out a few posts before mine, there was at least an earlier tablet from another company.

Yawn. The article is so full of shit.

Why? Because it's not praising Microsoft?

As a consumer who still does not own a tablet, I see nothing in Microsoft Surface that would make me pick it over the new iPad.

Ah look another accusing post from someone that yesterday was talking thrash about pre-orders because tlou and gow:a not being in the usa top 50 must surely mean that the pre-order chart is biased and inaccurate.

Cheers for yet another quality accusation.
