Microsoft is going to have a rough time of it if they release the product for one nickel more than the base-level iPad.

It's $499 or bust, Microsoft. Which leads me to question their decision of putting 32GB of storage in the base model...

Microsoft outsource Surface tablets to Pegatron; expected prices above US$599
Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 20 June 2012]

Sources from notebook players have revealed that Microsoft's 10.6-inch Surface tablet PCs will be outsourced to Pegatron Technology for assembly; however, there is still not a firm estimate for order volumes.

The sources also estimated the end-market price of the Windows 8 Pro-based Surface tablet PC with Ivy Bridge processor to be at least above US$799, while the Windows RT-based model, featuring Nvidia's Tegra 3, will be priced above US$599.

The sources pointed out that the industrial design of Microsoft's Surface tablet PCs should attract consumers in the enterprise market, but their high prices are expected to become the biggest obstacle in the market.

The sources also pointed out that the Surface tablet PCs have successfully attracted the attention of consumers, but the strategy also means that Microsoft will directly compete against its downstream partners in the Windows-based tablet PC market. Since Microsoft is only expected to receive limited profits from its own-brand tablet PC products, while greatly offending its clients, the strategy that Microsoft has taken is rather risky.

799 for the pro is anything but high priced especially for the corporate world

on the last beat it could be true.... but looking at how windows tablet don't sell right now... if the surface work it might actually helped their partner... by developing the market they can create huge opportunity, either with some pricing their tablet lower through economy of scale of their own hardware production.... or more powerful device....

i just read the article on gizmodo about windows phone 8 and it has built in support for up to 64 cores.... so windows 8 pc should be future proof and help partners come out with beasty tablets or ultrabook tablets like the dual screen asus taihi or something like that for the long run...

Ok, the RT tablet HAS to be at most $500 for the 16GB model. If it doesn't match iPad pricing, it wont sell.

The Pro model could be $800+ as its more of a laptop, but it has to be within the price of other i5 laptops really. Not much more.

Hmmm, I'm not very optimistic that the prices for these tablets/ultrabooks will be decent. I hope they understand that the base model can't cost more than the iPad or else they're doomed.

So the RT Version will be cheap ?

And the Pro Version will be expensive ?

What will the Pro Version has that the RT doesnt?

It's a completely different machine. The Pro is an Intel-based full version of Windows 8, like your laptop or desktop. The RT is the equivalent of an iPad, running Windows 8 on ARM architecture.

What planet are you from where people were super-duper tech-savvy before tablets came along? It surely isn't the one where I show people how to search their inbox for specific emails or select multiple items in a folder.

If people get confused by the difference between Win RT on ARM and Win 8 on x86, that's Microsoft's own fault for launching two different devices called Surface running two different OS SKUs on two different architectures. If Microsoft can't communicate the distinction to their customers, calling them stupid and computer illiterate (I try not to be a grammar nazi, but the way you mangled the word "illiterate" is too ironic for me to let pass by) isn't going to help their sales pitch any.

Is something unsuitable about all the other tablet + keyboard solutions already out there?
