Not sure about 2012, but in 2011 E3 has 46,800 attendees.

Gamescom 2011 had 275,000 attendees.

E3 not allow common people get in

Which is the all the more reason to be at Gamescom. Your consumer base are the ones who attend.

you really think it's so important to let consumers already owning consoles play a few demos? it's not like half of the people visiting the gamescom plan to buy a ps3 or 360. they already have them. it's maybe imprtant for sony to show vita to the public and it could be maybe good for nintendo because of the wii u but microsoft doesn't have to show some demos they can play later on live to people who won't buy a 360 anymore or already have a 360.

and new game announcements only shown on some screens, who needs that? we all have a laptop/tablet/desktop pc

only reason i see it important is because television will report about it (at least german television) if we see sony on tv but not nintendo and microsoft i think this will mean more tv time for sony which is good advertisement.

Yeah, why not? The customers play games they otherwise wouldn't be able to to and then get to spread information via word of mouth.

Pleasing your customer base is one of the best ways to keep them loyal.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

I am thinking that MS will unveil their nextbox at CES 2013.

I am pretty sure MS are no longer attending CES and instead will be having their own event.

Sony should throw together a showcase for the Vita for both Gamescom and TGS

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

What was announced in Gamescon last year?

People say it's big, but I don't remember it being big - especially with new things.
Someone educate me, please

Not positive, but I know that this is the show Sony used to unveil the PS3 slim.

I believe Gamescom is also where Sony first showed Escape Plan and the PS3 price cut. Other than the price cut however it was fairly Vita focused, which is what I expect for this year's event as well.

Gamescom seems to be more focused with hands-on stuff for the attending crowd and some hardware announcements rather than full blown reveals for new titles, even though they do sometimes make an appearance.

That's what I imagined it to be. Yet, people say all the time this is like an e3-like event.

Personally, I'm hyping more Game Heaven and Capcom Summer Jam than this.

It's like E3 but for the public. Biggest gaming convention in the world.

For the media mostly EU specific games are being announced there and especially Sony makes some bigger, worldwide announcements there like slim model or price cut.

I remember hearing that.

I guess they will unveil it at their own conference.

why can't they otherwise? we get them as demos some weeks before release...why do i have to play forza if i can at home as demo? and like i said, people who don't own consoles don't go to the gamescom. not that late in this gen. sure with new consoles i think it's important, that's why i said sony should be there for vita and nintendo for wii u if they really think people will like it if the play wii u demos. but i see not much microsoft could do there, even if they would have many more games. not for millions such a convention will cost a company. will they sell 2k 360s  to the 250k visitors and their friends after that? not very important.

€dit: ok you said please the customers i read over that. yeah ok this is maybe a point but not sure if really so important anymore.

Then I'm not going there either. Horrible line-up this year.

@DirtyP

I guess that was a Saturday ? I was there twice on a Saturday (2 years ago and in Leipzig 2007) and those days were horrible. Just go on another day if you can manage that.

I planned to go on a Thursday last year but I had no ride to Cologne and going alone sucks.

I didn't make these pics. I have been in Leipzig a couple of times, but not in cologne. And yeah I have been there quite on a friday, saturday and sunday.

Where are you from? Maybe we can go together 2013. I won't attend 2012 without MS and Nintendo. If they are back next year, I might go.

Saarbrücken lol.
Still a few kilometers to Cologne but far better than driving to Leipzig.

Did you camp in Leipzig or did you go into a hotel ?
I was in the crowd when GIGA Games broadcasted their show on a Sunday morning at 9am in 2007. Probably my favourite moment ever (at GamesConvention/Gamescom). When I went there on a Saturday I could only play about 2 games and both sucked (NFS Pro Street and PES 2008). Then on Sunday I could basically play everything I wanted without having to wait longer than 10 minutes.

It never becomes no longer important to please your customer base.

When you think it is no longer important is when someone else takes the opportunity to swoop in and grab all the attention, and when it comes to gaming, mindshare is very important.

Yeah, they might not always have the newest and the latest and greatest to show, but at least it lets your fanbase know "Hey, we are still here guys and we still have things to share with you". I feel this is better than showing in Feb. at CES, June at E3 and then dissappearing.

Even so, let us see what they mean when they speak of local events and such, maybe Microsoft still have something planned between now and early 2013.

That's a damn pity really -killing your presence in one of the 3 biggest gaming conventions in the world. That's just bad for business and a sign of giving up on certain territory.

Bad business move Microsoft. Any advertisement is good advertisement and you're just willingly giving that spot light to your competitors.
