Forums - Sony - 4 things PS4 needs to win next gen

Uncharted 2 and 3 both selling over 6 million LTD..

That's a system seller if you ask me. Not many exclusives sell that much.

It all comes down to games... marketing... and price.

Marketing is the most important thing though. If you make the most amazing system with the best games, but nobody knows about it... then nobody will buy it .

Marketing comes after games & price. Marketing is useless if the product isn't....marketable.

If console A = Great Games + Low Price + Weak Marketing
And console B = Shitty Games + High Price + Great Marketing.

Console A would sell more.

I disagree. You can sell shit on a stick to people, and if you market it the right way... people will still buy it (kinect)

hmm... I'd argue that Kinect is fun & innovative, but that's just my opinion.

1. That may result in an attractive loss per system. But yeah, it may be necessary to make the software and accessories sell.

Actually it would just about break even or even mae a small profit with the specs I have in mind (link is in op)

2. Yup. This is the most important part.

3. It will be hard to break Xbox Live subscribers trust to their old familiar interface. I mean, they spend lots of money for it. If Sony can match that quality and make it free, hopefully the word of mouth makes people jump over.

Yep, and I don't think Sony has to make people pay since plenty of money is coming in from things like PS+ and Netflix.

4. Well, so far they have failed massively when it comes to the Vita's marketing. Every single person I talk to about Vita has no idea of what I'm talking about. They need better marketing to make their brand stronger, once again.

Agreed

Anyway, great analysis. Thanks!

1. They wouldn't be making a profit at that, they can't afford not to. Check the link in this point, it'll break even with the specs I have in mind
2. Only 1 of those games has a chance of coming at launch, and that's the New IP.
3. It'll be hard, but the most likely.
4. Looking at the Vita, that ain't gonna happen.

I hope Sony are gonna change after their lackluster Vita launch, I really do but from current trends, it doesn't seem likely.

In my opinion, a more fitting title would be "Four requirements for Sony to have a chance at winning Next Gen" or better yet "Four requirements in which Sony can be competitive Next Gen". Each of those won't individually give Sony first place. It'll take about three or four of them for Sony to have a chance, but even then it's still only a chance. At this point, the three companies have a fairly equal shot at winning imo, because of many of the reasons in the OP.

What I meant was all of these things need to happen for Sony to win next gen. I guess it isn't clear, will change the title ;)

To be honest I think it will be very hard for Ps4 to compete against Next-box, it won't be like Ps3 vs 360 again.
-Sony probably can't afford to sell consoles on loss while M$ can still do it, this means M$ could sell a better hardware for the same price, or they could sell the same hardware for a lower price.
-M$ with (possibly) integrated kinect can cater to casual audiences, the Ps4 would need something new and innovative since the PSmove bombed.
-With smartglass and possible windows8 integration, the XB will be a complete browsing / social / multimedia device. (Sony could compete integrating android thought)
-M$ already has the strongest offer of online services, and it can only get better in the future.
-In terms of exclusives the Ps3 has more variety but only a Uncharted, GT and God of War are really big, also GT is in decline in terms of sales, Halo has become bigger one by now.

^Wrong.

Halo is also in decline. Having new and unproven developers won't help either. Plus its been surpassed by COD as the #1 FPS.

You also forgot LittleBigPlanet is close to 5 million sales.

Kinect, like Wii.... has lost steam already.

I did, but you've gotta remember they need to sell it to retailers and they need to make a profit, $50 is about right, so Sony would sell it for $350 to retailers, at the lowest.

Not a profit.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

No sorry you are wrong, Halo is not in decline, compare Halo3 + Halo3 ODST + Halo Reach VS Halo:Combact Evolved + Halo 2

Now compare GT3 VS GT5 or GT4 vs GT5.

COD is mutiplatform it makes no sense to talk about, or If you really whant to talk about it's a point in favour of nextbox. Since, as I said, Ps4 will likely have an inferior hardware or be more expansive, Nextbox will likely be the best alternative for multiplatoform games.

For big IP I mean something that sells around 5-6 million units each iteration, LBP1 has almost reached 5million copies while LBP2 went only to 2.5m copies.
