Black Ops DLC is ~7GB. Come on Nintendo HDD's aren't expensive !

Which is exactly why those who actually need/want extra space can simply go out and buy whatever fits their needs.

Sure it's not too much of a pain for us gamers, but it is a pain that shouldn't be there. But for your average Joe bloggs? 8GB? Most smartfones have more than that for flip sake.

Most smartphones cost $500 or more when you're not signing a contract. Do you want a $500 console? I'd rather havea  $300 console and the choice to buy any USB HDD for $50 if i think I need it.

If Nintendo doesn't make a storage solution, won't publishers be hesitant to offer DLC and digital games as a regular flow?

Isn't that what happened with the Wii?

Aside from that concern, I definitely love the sound of this. I would rather pay for the exact storage I wanted rather than have Nintendo sell me a 32gb card for 100 dollars (Hi there, Sony!).

360 has always had a limited version or a higher end for more money. Nintendo is simply saying we won't force you to take our proprietary storage. If you need it, get what best fits your wallet and usage.

Y U NO OFFER ME HDD OPTION?!

This changes everything. Again.

Pezus, i thought you would be for this, namely since knowledgable users wouldn't want the system that Sony and Microsoft have in place, namely Microsoft.

Actually a lot of Mid Range smartfones cost sub 300 Euro off contract. It's the high end best of tech smartfones that are over 500.

Some of you are crazy.

This is a perfect solution and THE best option for consumers.

MOST people won't need more than 8GB and already have quite a few SD cards laying around or would be happy with buying an $10 16GB SD card to pop in there.

Those that will want more storage are by far in the minority and will have no issues spending $50 or a large usb HDD (up to 1TB probably for that price).

This way Nintendo can keep costs low, increase the lifespan of the WiiU, reduce its size, reduce it heat/noise levels, etc etc.

I am really happy with this solution. Especially if WiiU has connectivity to my PC like my PS3 does.... then it really doesn't matter as all my large media content will simply be streamed from the PC to the WiiU. Videos take up the most space anyways.

i completely get your point and overall it is a pretty good one but i still think 8Gb is pretty small.  i can't really determine exactly how much of my harddrive is strictly patches but i'm pretty sure it's over 8 Gb by now.  ..and i just don't see the number and size of patches going down next gen.

but yeah, i completely agree not everyone needs the massive HD i have.  next gen i'm thinking i'll need at least 3-4 Tb to be happy.  i'm at around 400 Gb so far..

I thought this was a good thing. Now after reading all these comments is using an external hardrive really a bad thing?

Does it hamper performance or something?

I ask because some of you say it will and others say it won't.

Personally I think not being forced to use propriatery memory is a great thing. I really don't want to have to spend an insane amount of money for memory like Vita owners do.

I'm an advocate for motion controls, Nintendo, and Kicking freaking Toad to the Moon!

However if it is possible to hook up an external HDD and use ALL the data from the WIi U to there (not that music and movie file crap that PS3 has) then that would be the best and disregard the last paragraph

It is my understanding that that is the case.

It is my understanding that it might not be, we dont have the information that says it will be the case, I hope it is. But it could just be like PS3 where you could do the same thing but you are limited in what could be saved.  This is Ninty so im expecting the worst in this regard...but hoping for the best.

All the news sources I've seen have said the contrary. Perhaps I'm just not understanding your question correctly, which is why I hedged my answer. But if you're asking "can I store all my stuff in the HDD and the Wii U will access it?" the only reasonable interpretation of everything I've seen is "yes."  YMMV

*shrug*

It isn't the fact that you can use an external HDD or SD cards, it's the fact that you have to buy something like that on top of the system itself. The games are going to be $50-60, most likely, and who knows how much another GamePad is going to cost. Having to shell out another $50-100 for an external HDD is not something a lot of people are going to like. Don't forget that Nintendo seems to be going in the direction of offering all of their titles as downloads, too, so digital distribution is something they want as part of the Wii U, and a measly 8GB of internal storage is not going to cut it.

All these prices are purely guesswork, since Nintendo hasn't released any prices yet...

System - $300
2 games - $50-60 each
Wii U GamePad - $100-150

That's at least $500 right there, with an upwards total of $570. Add another $50-100 for an external HDD and people might start getting mad.
