Forums - Microsoft - Did Microsoft just make Nintendo's Wii U tablet irrevelant?

Anyone who owns an iPad knows that virtual joysticks and buttons can be overlayed on top of the game to control it. You don't need physical buttons ala the Wii U tablet.

There is no way that the smart glass is going to beat Nintendo Wii U..
It sounds interesting but it has a long way to go, in order to compete with Nintendo.

Wow, I though Sony fans were bad.

Virtual Joysticks don't hold a candle to actual buttons when it comes to gaming. Seriously, this was a joke of a post.

Poor Microsoft. It only has billions and billions of dollars, a profitable pc business it stole from Apple. Of course it needs to drive Sony and Nintendo out of business, after all they only invented the game industry.

yeah because Microsoft wasn't incoporated before apple and didn't publish games before sony.....

The post you answered to was kind of dumb, but your reply is even dumber. You tackled nothing of what he actually said and simply shifted the goalposts.

Good job, your previous posts just lost all their credibility (not that they had any in the first place). The WiiU pad not comfortable? It's more comfortable to hold a 360 controller and a padlet?

Why do some of us even argue with people like you, such a waste of time.

i don't know if the console would be able to stream without delay to the SmartGlass. Even if that was the case, i think Wii U will still be very successful no matter what

They can't, it's as potential as using Remote desktop connection in windows. It's done over the internet.

Not so certain of that. With the existing Xbox Companion Apps (and SmartGlass is the next version of this) it works on home network as a peer after initial connection through Xbox Live.

You may be right, but two issues are yet unresolved.

1) The geolocation sensors used in the WiiU pad.

2) The need to hold two devices rather than just one with the WiiU pad.

Lastly, even if smartglass matched the WiiU pad in capability one day or even today, that doesn't render the WiiU tablet irrelevant.

Defending such a statement would simply be rooted in anti-Nintendo sentiment. I'm not saying that's you, but I am saying, now that we've covered all the points,

Smarglass was just awarded in Eurogamers "Best of E3"

Least Useful Technology: SmartGlass and Xbox Music, which allow you to do all sorts of things you can already do, but in a more connected way. Did they mean to say "more branded"?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

People just dont understand shades of grey and competition.

SmartGlass doesnt need to beat Wii U. It is competition and from what we have seen the uses of the Wii U except for whats being done with Zombie U (And even that can be done, just maybe not as effieciently) can be done with SmartGlass.  Most of the games that Nintendo has shown so far make use of the Wii U screen as a screen for an extra player or for informational purposes. Things that SmartGlass can do quite well. Some examples this gen.

Just Dance series on Wii doesnt really know that you are dancing when you shake the Wii Mote and Dance Central tracked full body movement with Kinect. People playing Just Dance still had fun.

Most of the games in Wii Sport only relied on using the Wii Mote as a motion controlled switch.  You didnt need to make the actions like the real sport to play.  People still had fun.

Not to mention that no one is speaking about what SmartGlass features that the Wii U controller doesnt have.

SmartGlass is multi-touch. Yes Nintendo says they dont need it.  We will see.  We will see how many people expect pinch and zoom and it never works.
Xbox 360 can handle up to 4 SmartGlass devices.  Wii U can handle 2.
SmartGlass works with the devices people already know.
SmartGlass devices will be more powerful devices with developers more experienced with the platform.
SmartGlass will have a much larger install base and that will appeal to publishers when it comes to decisions about building in features common to both platforms or to provide special features for the larger install base.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Why do you all keep thinking Smart Glass functionality requires a tablet on your lap?

Just connect a smartphone to the 360 controller. Of course using duct tape.

In all seriousness though, smartglass will be good for mimicing the "TV-Off" feature of the WiiU padlet since the tablet using smartglass can become a portable TV.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

1) Are you saying that the Wii U pad is likely to have more sensors than a smartphone or tablet?  What sensors does the Wii U have? I know it has sensors for motion, but what else? Does it have GPS? NFC? etc.

Good question, and thanks for removing the </thread> tag otherwise we couldn't have continued.

I'm not sure what the geosensor is, but from what I understood it was not GPS, and it was magnetic. But it was in one of the E3 videos, and I can't find it :(

What I did understand is that it's the HW behind the neat trick of superimposing the two screen images to match, and being able to see the 3D world from your tabled by turning it in angles away from the TV (by rotating around yourself).

NFC it has, but that's not a differentiator in this smartglass debate.

Other than that Luke, I really do not know. The force is strong in you though.
