Forums - Microsoft - Did Microsoft just make Nintendo's Wii U tablet irrevelant?

*uses trollogic*
SmartGlass makes console games into tablet games. The Wii U makes tablet gaming irrelevant. Therefore, the Wii U makes SmartGlass irrelevant. ;)

Software that is going to be on a multitude of devices of varying capabilities that the user may or may not have. That is setting aside the it would require you to be Shokan to use as effectively as a Wii U Gamepad. Which is a standardized piece of hardware with the same capability for everyone included with every WiiU.

Yet time has proven that given the choice of "Free" and "Expensive", they are going to choose free with a minimal reduction in quality, if or when it is available.

If a device gives you a slightly degredated capability of another system, but at no cost, consumers will buy it up. Look at YouTube. it's not the greatest quality for videos, movies, or music, yet people clamor over it because its free. The same can be said for paid/free gaming apps. When users can get them free, they will clamor over them.

This situation is the same way. Will the WiiU tablet be "Better"? Probably. Will consumers purchase it due to this differentiation? Not any more. Its the same thing with handhelds vs. Smartphones. There isn't enough differentiation between the devices, which has caused a significant reduction in market penetration for the new generation of handhelds. Primarily because they'd rather game on devices they already have than buy a dedicated system for it.

Except, you know, that it HASN'T.  3DS is tracking well above the DS at this point in its life, and Vita is about where the PSP was.  So where is the evidence that is the case, other than a vague feeling that it should be true.

I make games for mobile devices.  I know first hand the limitations a touch screen only provide in gameplay.  The limitations in actual game-play potential on home console games will be astronomical, not "a minimal reduction"

...How many price drops did the original DS have this far into its lifespan?

That answer alone should tell you exactly how well the 3DS is doing in relation to what Nintendo expected. Additionally, I would ask where user demand is going to create demand for the 3DS like what we saw with the DS during its 3rd, 4th and 5th years' on market where it really took off.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

At least one, actually, since the DS Lite released in Japan 15 months after the original model. The DS had also been through 2 Holiday seasons at this point in its life compared to the 3DS's 1. And the 3DS is tracking ahead of DS in both hardware AND software. FAR ahead in hardware, in fact, without a redesign.

“Xbox SmartGlass Makes Wii U Irrelevant”

Xbox SmartGlass was first rumored to make an appearance at E3 this week but has now been revealed to the public. A couple days ago, 14U revealed their thoughts on the new feature and said that Xbox SmartGlass will eventually kill the Wii U. Now a video game journalist from Pocket-lint, Stuart Miles, thinks that the Wii U is irrelevant because of the fact that Xbox SmartGlass exists.

“Microsoft has revealed the launch of Smart Glass for Xbox 360 that makes the Wii U almost irrelevant.

Revealing the new feature at the company’s press conference to kick off the E3 gaming convention, the company announced that from this Christmas gamers will be able to pair Windows 8 powered tablets and PCs, as well as, Phones with the console to watch movies, play games, and use it as a remote control.”

Sorry I haven't yet read the rest of the responses. So here is mine.

No if anything this should be a big boost for the console. Nintendo's competitors each have a set up that can duplicate the WiiU's controller but they are add-ons that require extra money to get. (A Vita or a Kinect) But with these set up available it make it more intising to make a game for the WiiU set up around the controller and then port it to the PS3/360 and require Smart Glass/A PS3/Vita setup to play.

If anything it seems like a stop gap solution from Microsoft but really not a threat and something that will be an after thought on the console for developers since it needs more time to implement.

Wii U is way better, it's made for gaming. I'm a xbox fan but this is not going stop me from buying Wii U

Not at all. You have to buy both a 360 AND a tablet/phone/etc. This will cost you between 300 - 600 dollars. Also, it does not double as a controller as WiiU's tablet controller does. Also, it doesn't come with the xbox, so developers will not HAVE to use it in any way. Nothing worthy will come out of this. ON TO THE NEXT ONE!!!

And by the time the Wii U comes out there will be more people with an Xbox 360 and any of the devices that Smart Glass supports than the Wii U will sell in its 1st year. So what should developers target?

It's tough to say man. You certainly have a point, but it all comes down to how the WiiU performs in its first year. If it is anywhere near as widely accepted as the Wii, then the whole irrelevance factor will not hold any truth to it. I would think developers will wait and see market demand to decide which platform to better support. If this softglass concept moves on to the next Xbox (which it probably would), then it has more relevance. There are too many factors up in the air to really decide on which will become irrelevant. Both have their arguments.

The WiiU is a whole package, so developers know if they do something for it it will be used as intended. The Xbox is relying on customers purchasing other products (which granted have widely penetrated the market), so developers may find a risk to that. Again, the opposing argument is there are more 360s and phones/tablets in the market now as you said in your last post. We'll see. It is certainly interesting though to watch the battle unfold.

I'm just going to leave this here...

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

I think it was G4 or some other site, but they brought out a good point. How many people are going to want to do something like this. It requires extra effort (though not much), especially considering that people today are unwilling to "read" a picture menu, to add extra controls to a game.

In addition the people who are interested in the in-depth information are already using their smart phones etc to look up the information themselves. All in all it comes up as a rather unneeded addition.

Nope but microsoft actually made their smartglass interesting unlike nintendo.

I seriously don't think the Xbox Smart Glass will catch on at all.
