Forums - Nintendo - Will we see a 3DS revision this year? (Nikkei sez "yup")

And lol at the 300,000 yen Wii U typo!

Hmm, a brand new toyota or a Wii U?

Yeah, the Nikkei rumor is obviously just that (a rumor), but they've had an excellent track record on these things, so it's looking like I was wrong.

seems unlikely this year, but next year seems like a safe bet.

BREAKING NEWS: A bigger 3DS coming?

Eh, no. Or at least I hope not. Nintendo will just start to be making their money back this year, I think they'll wait till Fall of 2013, that seems like the best time.

Only time will tell. I for one hope they do release it. I would get it for sure. I hear what you're saying about them needing to make their money back, but maybe a larger version would boost sales and increase interest in the system -> more games. I love my 3DS, but they also have to compete with the iPads and iPhones of the world, and maybe a bigger screen will help in that.

I don't think the big displays would help with the iPhone/iPad competition at all.

Though, it could get older people to buy one due to their hands being larger. Still, I think a release next year would be best.

(An announcement this year at E3 could be good though... it might build up hype for it.)

Yes, my guess it will be announced now, but not released until next year. However, personally, I will want one now!

I am going to reply to both of your posts.

1) A 3DS XL could retail for $189 or $199. The bigger size is an easily understood reasoning for a higher price over the standard model and it's still below the crucial $200 mark. Consumers will see why they have to pay more and it doesn't interfere with Nintendo's plans to stop losing money on each hardware sale.

2) Smartphones and tablets are not direct competition to the 3DS.

3) It gives consumers a choice. A good choice, might I add. Therefore a 3DS XL is not a bad idea and should be launched as soon as possible.

4) A Nintendo system must be designed in a way that fits the software that is played on it. The current 3DS is barely sufficient to do NSMB2 justice, so a revision is not only recommended, but almost required.

Good points. A lot of older people loved the DS XL and thought the 3DS was a step down from it due to smaller screen.

For me, as much as I love my 3DS, I thought there were a few design flaws. Battery life, floppy hinge, not-so-great start and select buttons. I also think we need a second circle pad.

So I think it would be a great option for the older crowd, as well as the hard-core crowd that may want a larger, more hardcore screen and a second circle pad to rock out to the likes of Resident Evil and Monster Hunter.

Great points, Rol.

1.) Wouldn't making a bigger display and touch screen be more money, though? I would think they would still loose money on it even with that bigger price.

Bolded.) I wouldn't mind playing NSMB2 on a large 3D Display... hmm... I really like that idea.
