Since 2005—when we launched Xbox 360—we have sold 67 million consoles and have generated more than $56 billion at retail, and we’re still going strong in our seventh year. With 47 percent share of the current-generation console market (American), we are hitting our stride largely as a result of the success of Kinect for Xbox 360 (19 million sold ) and the flood of new entertainment options through Xbox LIVE (40 million members).

Xbox LIVE subscribers now spend an average of 84 hours per month on the console. For comparison, the average American watches a little more than 150 hours of TV in the same period. The more entertainment options we add, the more time people spend on Xbox. In the last six months, we’ve grown our entertainment library on Xbox to include more than 60 voice controlled applications and more than 200,000 premium movies and TV shows. (Yes that includes Crackle) trololololol....

$56 billion is no laughing matter but I'm curious how much of the Red Rings of Death ate into that revenue as well as refits, respecs and R&D on newer iterations of the 360?

generated more than 56b at retail could mean a lot of things. We really should try and find out how those numbers were calculated because I already see a huge problem with them, ie; it should be 10b more than that.

56b is the NET profit...

Considering the RROD fiasco. Its well on the range of my own prediction.

56bn is not the net profit, 56bn is the "revenue at retail"... so it isnt even the revenue for that MS has received (which will be less).

The 56bn will include every dollar spent on anything 360 related, be that hardware, 1st party or 3rd party games

Is that what it means? Sorry lol.

it does not say that. All it says is that at retail (meaning sold in a store not dlc or through ms directly) they have made 56b in sales of probably anything xbox related.

Edit: I wonder what percentage of live gold subscribers pay ms directly and what percent buy cards online or in stores. Now all we need is some DLC info.

This is basically the whole ecosystem fo the Xbox 360.

Add a couple of billions for DLC (movies, XBLA, GoD, Themes, Indie games, Avatar stuff) and XBL fees and you will get a good idea about the market.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Ha, none of the above that's for sure. Even Nintendo with the cobined profits of the Wii and DS would still be in the first poll option (in fact I think Nintendo's combined profits since the NES are probably still in the first option, though it could be close to entering the next)

Yeah the revenue at retail figure will be every $ spent by people buying the console/games and accessories etc.

You have to take away the portion of that money that went to 3rd parties for their games, then all the money MS spends making and marketing the console, as well as R&D developing it (and Kinect) to get to what the profits are.

There is some info in MS financial reports that has been used to estimate the profits, and I think by now they may be starting to break even with it, at most it will still be short of $1 billion profit (though it is at least growing now), though it's hard to say as the division of MS the Xbox is in includes other products.

Yeah, exactly. We should find out how this "at retail" was figured out.

Is it shipped; is it sold?
Is it purely retail, or is it also online purchases?
Is it discounted, or is it full priced?
What products are they counting?

The Xbox brand lost Microsoft over 9 billions dollars before it started to turn a profit a couple years ago. I'd say that the 360, without the original Xbox factored in, has pretty much broken even.

i think kowenki has a thread with some of te info but i am pretty sure that the 360 has been a money maker. Not barely broken even but generating some good profit. I could be wrong will see if i can find the thread.
