150 hours the month watching tv on average? wtf? ok most people work, let's say from 8am to 5-6pm (in germany), they have to drive to work and back which eats some time as well. so the average person comes home and watches tv the rest of the day and goes to bed then (with a bit fucking before sleeping)? yes i know there are people not working anymore, jobless and kids but still, this is insane.

Well you don't have to be active watching it :).   It happens a lot that i come home turn on my tv and don't do it out until I go to bed.

I have a lot of friends who don't really *watch* TV, but will always have it on for "background noise."

Also there's some overlap in those numbers as I know quite a few people who watch Netflix via their 360s.  That 84 hours on the console may not be 84 hours of game playing.

yeah i forgot about that. i do it as well when i go to bed. i start the tv with 60 minutes sleep timer and hear a little bit in the backround before i fall asleep. just imagine we all on this planet wouldn't do so many stupid things if it comes to energy wasting (for other things as well)

Microsoft has made at the very least around five to six billion dollars in net profit off of the XBOX brand. You can't get that out of the financial statements however. The division that houses XBOX is filled with many product lines, and probably a great deal of non gaming related R&D. The best you can really do is some common sense math. Plug in the variables, and even if you are very conservative you get some staggering results.

A few years ago this community did that math, and reached the consensus that Microsoft had already turned the corner on the brand. Factor in a profit as little as twenty five dollar annually per console sold, and you reach a net profit of at least five billion dollars. Which isn't only conservative, but pretty damn hard not to meet on the part of Microsoft. Given all the revenue streams the company utilizes. You can break that up however you like between royalties, subscriptions, advertizing, and retail profit.

Now if that argument doesn't sway you then this should. Does anyone seriously expect Microsoft which is a very competent company to make less then a dime on every retail dollar. They don't even have to make that dime all at once. They can make it over the coarse of years, but it is hard to see them never reaching that dime. They just have too many ways to get that money. Even if it isn't all at the checkout the subscription service alone could cover the shortfall.

Ofcourse its not all gaming, Microsoft said it themselves that people now use the Xbox more as an online entertainment device rather than just a online gaming device. Although this would meen that MS should be recieving quite a good amount of money from ads since unlike TV you are more inclined to stay tuned to your dowloaded or streamed movie.

They put ads in those? I thought you paid extra for them on top of LIve anyway (Netflix subscription?) if there are also ads in them then that's fucked up, no wonder people just find them free online.

Where are the ads placed? if it's just at the start before the film then that's not too bad I guess (I would probably mute it and use the time to get a snack or something, or if it's possible to do it skip past it)

nah only on hulu plus.... or maybe the tv channel apps (never use those) but netflix or video from zune vudu or other pay per view app have no adds on it...

MS will most likely profit from the 360 when all is said and done, but thanks to the RROD fiasco and original XBOX cost I don't think they will be profitable overall for sometime. However, the MS division where the 360 was was never solely the 360, so many things have to be factored when looking at their overall profit on the xbox/360. It's only clear that the original XBox was a pure loss to get into the gaming industry, and that the 360 may or may not turn a overall profit (though I believe they will) when all is said and done.

Hopefully they are smart enough to break even or take very small losses when the 720 is out. No reason to lose money on the next round of consoles.

Looking at that chart Nintendo is the only company to have real success in the gaming industry, in terms of profit. The 3DS is the only reason they will be in the red for a year but overall they will profit again.

It's just that simple.

Not Netflix, but TV aps.

Also when someone has to access their app they will undoubtedly go through the dashboard that has those small soundless comercials in the corners that someone can't avoid unlike those on TV where someone can simply change the chanel.

This is why 142 percent increase in revenue from Xbox Live on the 360 since 2010.
