Forums - Sony Discussion - What system sellers could PS Vita possibly have?

No need to be so rude.

GTA: San Andreas was certainly a system seller. Other games I'd certainly include in that list would be Gran Turismo (used to really push consoles in Europe), Crash Bandicoot (before his franchise was abandoned and milked) and Final Fantasy (in particular VII).

Just like every console the PS and PS2 sold because they had games people wanted.

GTA: SA came out well after the ps3 had been market leader

GT: was a new IP in a unproven on conosles genre

Crash: was also a new IP

FF VII: was the first game in the franchise to sell as much as it did, FF V the game on the SNES sold 2.45 and was no where near the highest selling game on that console

try again

I don't know if you fully understand the concept of a system seller. It's a game that pushes the sales of systems upwards because of its popularity. All of the games mentioned did that, it doesn't matter if they were new IPs, that they hit new peaks or that they came out midway through the generation.

I think what OP fails to realize is that Vita IS NOT supposed to replace the PS3. It's supposed to replace your PSP.

I would say Monster Hunter, but now that it is sharing the franchise with the 3DS, I'm not sure it will have the same impact.

But that said, all it takes it one title to ignite the console, and it could come out of nowhere for all we know. I'm sure nobody expected Monster Hunter would single handedly revive the PSP in Japan, and nobody expected Brain Age and Nintendogs to ignite the DS to the heavens.

I'm asking this because I am genuinely curious.

It seems to me like all possible system sellers like Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Gran Turismo and Uncharted have superior versions on the PS3, which should halt their performance significantly. It just doesn't make sense to play games with deep stories or games that are heavily reliant on graphics and realism on a portable console: On the road, you won't get the same sensation as you would at the comfort of your home (and you look like a total nerd). While at home it wouldn't make sense to play Call of Duty on a small system with tiny sticks, poor sound, a small screen and loading times slower than the system's sales when there's a PS3 right next to you.

So, what do you think? Will the old system sellers actually push sales, or will Sony be forced to create new IP's specifically designed for the hardware like Nintendo's Brain Training and Nintendogs?

This is sadly very true. GTA with a 7.35 million cap as opposed to 20.81 says leaps and bounds by itself, though I do always love to point out how anemic PSP software market was and the fact that the best game in the series never made an appearance.  Some of these games may contain deep stories and graphical realism such as GTA but I don't think that's the reason why they are played.

I know all of two people who ever finshed a GTA game and none of them were displeased.  These gameplay elements might be enhanced with portability, connectivity and other interface changes.  A draw your own play on PSV might make it the best version of Madden and different from the console bretheren.  I hear nothing but praise so far for FIFA and it's touch integration.  Same of six axis aim assist.  We could see these series evolve into something portable now that developers can easily port engines and take time to finesse gameplay without having to crete vastly different art assets.  If EA can get that I don't see who can't.  Increased and better output from western stuidios is a system seller.

I think Sony will also try to craft handheld experiences.  They did with PSP.  I can't guarantee any massive success for them and I am astounded at how bad they have been at trying to grow these titles.  I wish they would buy the pixelJunk studio. I think with right marketing they just scream Portable hits.  All their PS3 titles have the right artstyle and genres to be great portable games and price points to boot.  I feel like Ape Escape was the last time Sony built a great game that really showcased hardware really well outisde the pixel pushing race.  Where on earth is Ape Escape Vita? I would settle for a 1-3 HD collection with a few gaiden in the meantime.

I know that I don't care about graphics, but games like Gran Turismo and Uncharted are dependent on them. And there should also be improved physics on the PS3 versions.

Like it or not, the Vita versions are inferior.

what they lack in visual fidelity, they make up for in portability.  they are not inherently inferior, just not catering to your personal values.

And that's just your personal view. Make one portable version of Gran Turismo and one home console version, then guess which one sells more.

THEY ARE NOT INHERENTLY INFERIOR, JUST NOT CATERING TO YOUR PERSONAL VALUES.  do you only read like one sentence then comment based on that?

I honestly have no idea why you bother

that's all well and nice...... but it didn't answer my question probably should have said at launch, you that periord the Vita is in right now

Sony needs to focus its first party Vita development more towards games like Sound Shapes and Gravity Rush and less on Resistance and Killzone.

Well lemme see here:

Uncharted was a huge seller on consoles, and golden Abyss is quite good
Resistance was at one point a huge seller, it's getting a sequel in a week
Call of Duty is THE seller, and it's getting an iteration on Vita (we'll see if it's new or a port soon)
Assassin's Creed is a huge seller, it'll be coming out on consoles
Grand Theft Auto is rumored to have a game in the works for Vita (rumored!)
Final Fantasy X HD will likely be a huge seller, as FFX was a quite successful game

Not to mention the waves of original content like Gravity Rush and Soul Sacrifice that could really push the system if they take off.

Yeah, they all have potential. Question is though if people are willing to spend money on both a home console version and a portable version with less content. Because that's a lot of money.

I guess we'll see soon enough.

They will if they want to play it on the road and if it's not available on consoles, like Golden Abyss and Bioshock Vita. And who says it has to have less content? LBPV is going to have more features than it's console counterparts. People clearly want Uncharted on PSV, it's sold 600k on a system that's only sold 2 million, Uncharted is probably near on around 800k if you count digital sales

MLB 12 The Show has less content, with that only being less replays, that way the game moves at a faster pace to keep it a bit more "bite sized".

Mortal Kombat has more content than any of the console versions thanks to an enlarged Challenge Tower.

LBPVita has more features and content than any console LBP.

His Uncharted example I think had something to do with detail in the graphics... although I don't know what that has to do with gaming "content" because the single player portion is just as large as any console Uncharted.

SFxTekken will have MORE than it's console equivalents.

Disgaea 3 has more content than it's console equivalent.

Resistance has a full scale single player and online multiplayer with various game modes.

Gravity Rush is a full sized sandbox title with DLC just like any console title.

Marvel Vs Capcom 3 is the same as it's console equivalent.

Rayman lacks co-op, but makes up for it with exclusive gameplay options. Still wonder why they axed co-op since the Vita can easily handle it as shown with various other titles. Oh well, Rayman Legends will show us soon.

Super Stardust contains more than it's console equivalent.

BlazBlue is virtually identical to it's console equivalent.

Plants Vs. Zombies contains more than it's console equivalent.

Ninja Gaiden is the same game as it's console equivalent only with newly added controls schemes.

These are launch-Launch window titles too. Only think of what comes next.

Claiming that Vita games have less content is just plain wrong and only shows the OP lacks the proper information required to begin that discussion.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Final Fantasy VII remake = Japan go crazy / FFVII fanboys go crazy
Monster Hunter = Japan again go crazy
COD = rest of world starts to give a fuk
MW = rest of world starts to give a fuk

Not saying it's a system seller but I don't feel like making a new thread. I just want to say that the Gravity Rush demo is finally out in the USA and it's awesome.
