I see it only working for small local businesses particularly in the service sector...

as for the second bolded... I'd HATE that.

Really, the key to successfully marketing on Facebook is a strong Internet presence, IMO. You need to give customers something to do through your online service. Whether that is to buy something, look at something, or whatever, it needs to be an engaging online experience and the customer needs to get a return on their invested time. Whether it's coupons, online services, cool shit to look at, whatever, something needs to hook the customer.

Businesses of any size can take advantage of the system, they just have to put the time and effort into customizing the experience for their customer base. Did GM do that? I don't know because I never followed them but considering how other businesses have thrived using Facebook advertising, I'd put the failure on GM, not Facebook.

Invading peoples' updates with ads would be terrible. I'd hate it, for sure. But I guarantee you it's on the table given the difficulty of marketing to mobile subscribers.

Ridiculously overvalued. I predict a burst of the facebook bubble in the coming months, as it is valued at 100x it's annual profit...a complete joke.

Why wouldn't their ad streams continue to work? Facebook has more access to your private life than any other ad stream out there. The way they can data mine your interests and tailor advertising to suit is unmatched and Internet advertising itself would have to fail for Facebook to fail. There's no company better positioned for direct customer advertising than Facebook. Not even Google is as well-positioned for advertising and they know it. That's why they created G+ in the first place.

GM have just ditched advertising there due to it being a waste of money

The big challenge for facebook is the lack of advertising on the mobile access... more ane more people will only access FB via mobile so they need to find a way to advertise on the mobile site otherwsie other advertisers will lose faith.  Now they are a listed company everything will be much more transparent so we shall see.

I've advertised on Facebook. It's anything but a waste of money. Like everything else, it's all about targeting. GM could have been doing any number of things wrong to cause a lack of return on the investment.

Mobile advertising is going to be a challenge, though. It will be interesting (and probably invasive) to see how social networks compensate. It's not hard to imagine a near-future when they start using peoples' actual updates to push relevant products.

I think GM stated that their other online advertisments had better returns (clicks). I think facebook is great to have your business on with a page(but thats free)

I've had shit experience with Facebook ads going to a website. The clickthrough is abominable and therefore, a bad value.

Where Facebook shines is getting people to click on to your FB page and getting a like. Then the customer is locked into your continued advertising until they unlike the page (which doesn't really happen very often).

To take over the world, they have to take over China as well. I don't see that happening with China having their own version of google ( baidu ), twitter ( wei bo ) etc, Mark Zuckerberg can visit China all he wants.

Do not allow yourself to be blinded by fear and anger. Everything is only as it is.

long term...

I don't see this working. Most users access FB through mobile and there is no way people will accept intrusive ads on mobiles.

GM have just ditched their contract with FB. I don't buy FB and social media as worthwhile marketing hubs... I just don't.

FB turns on your gps location whenever it likes. You can't even turn it off unless you turn your gps off completely which means all your other apps can't use it, too.

Be aware that your status update may be used to stalk you.

It sorta flopped. A lot of people are blaming NASDAQ because they didn't get out confirmations quick enough,

I greatly prefer Google+. I wish there was an easy way to get everyone to move over.

It allows you to manage your social life FAR better than FB and if you have an Android phone, you can make its content sooo much more seamless. Additionally, the default privacy is far better and much easier to setup/understand.

However, I can definitely see why FB is valued as it is and it will take a lot for anything else to really replace it.

these sites ONLY have value due to their advertising capability.  Without advertising they are worthless.  FB has a challenge to prove the advertising streams can work and continue to work.

Intrestingly GM also just ditched Superbowl Advertising.

In general I think it may have less to do with facebook and more to do with something tied to GM/Cars/ or just a new advertising belief.

They do need a way to make mobile ads work better though.  That I agree with.

yea but facebook makes no money off of that. Its free to have your business listed. I do agree its great for that though, it also enables you to get feedback direct from your customers in a timely nice way. We use it for the restauraunt I work at.

I was talking about using Facebook advertising to get a page like versus using it to direct to a website. With FB ads, those are your two options.
