Yeah, X-Men First Class was quite well put together.

i'm not defending Michael Bay or anything but why does everyone allways praise Joss Whedon??? hes a freaking nobody director! besides from Buffy what has he done? LOL |
Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Dollhouse, Cabin in the Woods (which is awesome btw), and now The Avengers.
He also wrote the original Toy Story and Alien: Resurrection.

Well honestly, after hearing how Michael Bay was approaching the TMNT reboot with alien turtles instead, any other director would be better at this point. =P The Avengers alone proved him capable lol
not at all
5th on my list, a great popcorn flix, not a great movie
i agree completely, hated the dark knight and the sequel wont beat the avengers when its all said and done either.

You don't know what the hell you're talking about. Ruffalo's Banner/Hulk is the only adaptation of the character that has done the duo justice. Ruffalo spoke, acted, and felt like a tormented man. Hell, his hair and clothes were even scraggly. The Hulk, well... He was just a bad-ass that didn't care who he got to hit just so long as he got to hit somebody.
You're blasting Whedon's movie when he's the only guy to touch those characters who ever bothered to pick up a comic book and actually read about them. He so fucking stuck the landing on the Hulk that it made my inner comic geek heart just about burst out of my chest. After watching 30 years of shitty television shows, cartoons, and films about the character, it was nice to see somebody finally get it right.

Some people in this thread need a wake-up call. The Avengers is a superhero movie. It features an 80 year old super soldier, a god, a guy who build ridiculous armor in his spare time, and a dude who turns into a half-ton green beast. The brilliance of the movie is that Whedon never forgot any of that. Yes, Cap's shield reflects Thor's hammer because it's made of vibranium, an alloy that deflects any hit given to it. Realistic? No, of course not. But it's accurate to the damned source material. Whedon knew that if he didn't come at this movie completely bat-shit-crazy-balls-to-the-wall, it would fail miserably. So he took all the stories from the comics he has read over the years and made a brilliant fucking movie using the characters. Is Thor a god? Sure, but he's still not as strong as The Hulk when he's pissed. It's in the comic. Whedon knows that. Can Cap always catch his shield when he throws it and can he deflect any hit with the thing? Sure, it's in the comic. Whedon knows that. The Avengers couldn't be The Dark Knight. Batman is a unique comic character in that real-world, grounded stories can be told with the character. He lives in a relatively realistic world and is nothing more than a guy in a suit. It makes for a great movie character but not one that would work in The Avengers. This was a comic book movie in its purest form. If you couldn't suspend disbelief for two hours to get through the thing, you shouldn't be watching this kind of movie. It's that simple. Your literalism is your own failing, not Whedon's.

Dude, Snyder changed the entire ending of The Watchmen.
Whedon wrote a new story for this movie but you'll be hard pressed to find a truer adaptation of the characters themselves.

That's why I used to love team books so much. Just the character dynamics alone would wow me. This movie had that. I liked how it was pretty faithful to the comics when it came to who got along with who and who was respected. Probably my favorite part was when Cap faced off with Loki early in the movie. I was thinking to myself, "That's just what Captain America would do." Yeah, he always has a plan and a way to win, but whenever a despot is ranting and trying to subjugate people, Cap can't help but walk up to them and punch them in the face! It was a fun movie with some great moments and a cool culmination of a good experiment but, in the end, it was pretty forgettable. Aside from a lot of great characters in one place, the story was pretty weak. If I watch it again (and I will), I'll likely tear the movie a new ass by asking "Why did he do this? Why didn't he just do that?" As a comic come to life, I gotta say that it almost did everything that I wanted it to--especially the super-hero face offs like Hulk vs. Thor or Iron Man vs. Thor. The story just needed more time in the oven. Just seeing all of the heroes in one place will make it my favorite Marvel movie but X-Men First Class is easily a better package. Good comic brought to life. Great fun for a summer blockbuster. Kind of weak as a movie. Again, coming from a HUGE comic geek. |
I somewhat agree that the story was thin but Whedon was juggling ten characters in the movie and had to give every one their time to shine. I really don't know how he could have done a better job in ~150 minutes. He decided to make it a character piece and just kinda let the story roll along with their actions. Given all he had to do in the film while also making it a fun summer blockbuster, I can't fault him for making the choices he did.

People who are knocking this movie are lying to themselves. Doing the regular Internet thing. Knocking great movies. Was the story great? It got the job done and I enjoyed it. The characters and action was what got the job done! Shit! Even some of the writing was good, I laughed multiple times as did the entire theater! I am glad that Thor is not a total superman like character or the whole movie would be lame like all the superman movies other than the first. The captain played his role brilliantly I thought! Plus no offence rocket pig but I never read comics. Still loved this movie and understood all the characters and what was going on. Its nice to have a movie that you can just jump into and know what the deal is. Some of you are naming some lame ass superhero movies just to piss people off. |
The great thing about the movie is that anyone can enjoy it. My gf loved it but only has a passing interest in comics. Her friends enjoyed it and they have no interest in comics at all. On top of that, comic fans, real comic fans, have almost unanimously raved about the movie because Whedon got it so right. The movie is just a shitload of fun. I haven't seen an audience that into a movie in years. I couldn't even hear a lot of the dialogue because people were cheering and laughing so much.
Btw, Thor isn't close to a Superman character. He's not even as strong as the Hulk, though control of lightning and Mjolnir come close to evening it out. Powers-wise, Whedon got every character pretty much perfect, though Iron Man may have been just slightly overpowered.
