Forums - Microsoft - Is the 360 in trouble?

rocketpig said:
For those of you that are talking down Microsoft's lack of expansion over the Xbox demographic, I have two points:

- The 360 is tracking ~3.5m over the Xbox at this point in its life, and that gap is only widening
- The 360 is approximately $200 more expensive than the Xbox was at this point in its life (Pro 360 vs. Xbox 2003)

If you can refute that MS is not gaining market with those numbers, feel free to try. I'm dying to hear your reasoning.

microsoft is gaining market this gen more but the thing is its not to much and should even get more which i think banjo if released should help them gain more in japan and the rest of the world it is a system seller

This proves every PS3 fans point. The 360 will see a replacement long before the PS3. I would say 2010 at the latest. Based on the PS3 hardware, I would say the PS3 will outlast the 360 by at least 3-4 years. Even if we see a new PS in 2012, the PS3 will still be selling another 4-5 years later. I highly doubt M$ will be selling the 360 after they kill it. So again, Sony will make more money on the PS3 and sell far more units over its lifespan.

It's funny that these people assume the X360 is losing cash per console sold.

Care to provide proof? As of November 2006, it was breaking even.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

@darendt

Do you really believe Sony will give the competition a 2 year head start?

X360 will pass XBOX this year ..
so .. 2.5 years vs. 4 years

I give you some prices from one of the biggest electronic retailers in France. Then you can compare with your prices in other continents.

PS3 40Gb + PES2008 : 429Euros
PS3 40Gb : 399Euros

Xbox360 premium + Halo3 : 385Euros
Xbox360 Arcade (no game, no HDD) : 280Euros

Notice that no more Xbox360 Elite are now available (out of stock and no replenishment forecasted in the next weeks, the seller said to me...).

That means very little. 3.5 million over the Xbox at the same point in its lifetime is just like adding a few million more onto the lifetime sales of the Xbox or Nintendo 64. They would both still be a distant second, and in Microsoft's case, a distant, unprofitable second.

The 360 is still targeting a very narrow demographic. It's doing moderately well in NA, poorly in Europe, and bon-a-rien in Japan, and at best will end up a distant second, just like its predecessor.

3.5 million more after two years on the market is not an indication of expansion in any way, shape, or form. If it had improved by ten million and was doing well outside of N. America, then you might have a point, but until then, no.

It really doesn't matter because hardware is not the main cause of why MS has failed to turn a consistent profit.

they probably think its losing money on each console sold due to the price cut

well they have been also losing money because of how microsoft has been buying games though, those games will turn them a profit when released
