Forums - Sony - Uncharted series hits 17 million sales, UC3 GOTY edition confirmed

This bodes well for both Naughty Dog and for Sony. If U3 can top the sales of U2, Sony will have properly fostered a new IP this generation that has shown significant growth from release to release. Some of Sony's franchises this generation have failed to replicate the past successes of earlier releases in the series- be they from this generation or the last. Essentially some franchises have become a bit stagnant and may well become completely redundant looking into the future.

They need interesting new IP's that don't just sell well in the short term, but IP's that will translate into big long- term franchises. A critically acclaimed title like Uncharted that's showing now it can sell incredibly well is a welcome edition to Sony's software portfolio.

The future is looking bright for Naughty Dog. They've produced some amazing games this generation and with another new IP on the way it's easy to understand why Sony is focusing on expanding a few key studios rather than perhaps opening new ones. I think ND and SSM working on 2 games at a time is one of the single best pieces of news I've heard this generation. More games from fantastic studios!

Not only my favourite new IP this gen, but it has become one of my favourite game franchises ever. I'll never forget walking through the jungle in the first one and thinking 'HOLY SHIT THIS LOOKS AMAZING'. That was the moment when I really knew that the 'next gen' was truly here.

Great post. This is why I say Uncharted doesn't need Gran Turismo's levels of success. It's done better than another of Sony's premiere franchises (God of War) and will go on to be the #2 franchise in their catalogue. That's commendable, Naughty Dog should be proud, and I hope they can reach similar heights with the excellent-looking The Last Of Us.

No it definitely doesn't need Gran Turismo's level of success/sales. If it can show growth, perhaps through more exposure or word of mouth, up to its maximum sales potential bracket; ie for example 5.5-6m and ND can keep the franchise engaging and fresh, I believe Sony have a long term franchise on their hands that can successfully make the leap to other generations and even show growth there.

I mean 5-6 million in sales is impressive.

The developers continued interest in the series will be the single most important factor determining a successful future for the series. If it gets handed off to another studio as ND wish to explore other creative endeavours it might well flounder. After it's success this generation though, I have almost no doubts ND will be at the helm of another outing next generation.

(To clarify 5.5 million may be the upper limit of a series like this anyway and it's already maxed out so to speak, but U3 is trending higher so we'll see.)

As for GOW it's (along with Infamous to a lesser degree)  a title that sells big in NA but never found the same level of success in Europe. Uncharted has a much better split between NA and European sales.

I'm hoping the Last Of Us will also be a hit, looks intriguing from what we've seen so far!

This is now Sonys #1 IP. People say an IP should be measured on individual sales, which is true, but I also believe number of releases per gen matters just as well.

Good that Sonys best franchise came from this gen as an origional IP.

Critically anyway. Commercially, Sony's best franchise still holds firm at Gran Turismo.

Commercially, the Uncharted series sold more this gen then GT did. Unless offcourse your counting total GT sales spanning the PS1 and PS2 then thats just unfair.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Like I said early... Uncharted series sold 17 million this gen today... Gran Turismo series sold 16.38 million this gen as of Dec 2011.

Wait the new data before said which franchise sold more.

I'm guessing that's including Golden Abyss and the PSP Gran Turismo. If so, it's like I said: GT is in a class by itself for Sony Computer Entertainment.

Included both. 4x Uncharted games vs. 3x GT games.

GT is bigger than Ucharted... there is no doubt abou that... it's like Halo and Gears comparison.

Great sales! It's pretty much a fact that Sony's direction with the Uncharted franchise has paid off for them financially and critically, and it proves that Naughty Dog is pretty much the most capable developer in Sony's stable next to SSM. :)

Can't wait to see how they do with TLOU.

Wow!!! great stuff ND, I'm proud to say that I have all 4 uncharted games!!! keep up the great work ND, looking forward to "The Last of Us"
