| Lord Ciansworth said: You see I think in order to understand Nintendo's direction with this game we have to understand the genesis of the New Super Mario Bros. series. When it was originally spawned on the DS in 2006 it was the first 2D side-scrolling Mario game since 1992's Super Mario Land 2. It's clear from the game's art direction that Nintendo considered the it to be something of an exercise in nostalgia. The game used simple shapes and colours, much like its NES and SNES predecessors, simply rendered with a decent resolution. The game was a tribute as much as it was a game in its own right. As we now know the game went on to be colossal success, and this is where Nintendo's problem starts. How can you justify radically changing any game feature in a series whose previous two entries have sold in excess of 25 million units globally? Who would sign off on that? You'd have to be downright crazy. This is the same problem that COD has. The designers look at the game, its style, its content, its gameplay and know that any radical change to these elements risks destroying the delicate balance that constitutes a "hit" in the video game industry. Nintendo, rightly so from a business perspective, doesn't shake things up too much with their two biggest selling franchises, New Super Mario Bros., and Mario Kart. After all, who would want to be the game designer that messed up one of Nintendo's most bankable streams of income? |
Very, very good point.
So, since Nintendo want to keep a hit, but also want to make a good AAA 2D Mario game without being hindered by sales considerations and what makes a game a hit, why don't they do this: release any 2D Mario game in pairs, one for the true gamers, and one for the mainstream, since both are not mutually compatible. If their aim is awesomeness, then that's what they would do. But their aim is sales, so I say "Ciao Nintendo" when it comes to 2D Mario, I'd rather give up than have my tail wagging with no delivery on promise.

I wasn't on internet those days, but pretty sure it was the equivalent of todays: "Zelda's dead&kiddy. Nintendo doomed"

^Add to what you're saying, they were doing this in an attempt to make the game more interesting from a presentation perspective, and not the opposite for NSMB2 like Lord Ciansworth so well explained.

There were some "CD-i Zelda looks better, there I said it" here and there.
Or the classic, "f*** Nintendo, Link is now a Looney Toones!
I'll be the first to admit that when WW was teased, I was crying. After the Spaceworld 2000 Zelda demo, I wanted that. But once I actually played WW and saw the graphical beauty of the game with its toon graphics, it is now one of my most beloved games.
I know the same won't happen here, as Lord C explained above, they need to keep it as close to NSMB as possible, and frankly I'd had enough when I bought it for the DS. Great game, wouldn't buy 3 of 'em.
I will buy it second hand however, the mechanics look good. But for presentation, it is lackluster to say the least.
One thing I think everyone is forgetting.
Most of the time, we are "blowing up" the screen shots so that they are larger than what would be displayed.
I don't know much about the technical side of graphics -- I do know that such action makes them look "bad."

Like I said, this game will have some very nice suprises, the pictures give us some hints already... you're just with your mind set, so it's pretty hard to talk.
I think this is Mario 3 evolved. That's the winning formula, Nintendo found. And btw, all games look the same style as their predecessors. You played Spirit Tracks, go make a thread complaining about it too and how it looks similar to Phanton Hourglass, I say :)
