But merely being able to render such games won't be enough to really make them lifelike. Real life is extremely detailed. Games will require an insane amount of details, which means you'll have to make an even more insane amount of unique objects and textures. Making games lifelike will put extreme limitations on what you can do and especially what you can afford to do since these games will cost a fortune to make.
Edit: Photorealism might end up as a milestone of gaming, but it's probably gonna be a dead-end rather than a checkpoint. |
I introduce you too the "Unlimited detail" graphics engine. Made by a small Aussie company. :)

Also, photorealism is achieveable today, texture wise at any rate.
However, geometry increases haven't really increased linearly with fillrate and compute increases.
That's all started to change with Direct X 11 as the Tessellation push helps allot with that problem.

Not sure about photorealism, I would be quite satisfied to see those high quality cinematic cutscene graphics in actual gameplay.

The way games are made now has to change in order to get photorealism anytime soon. Like for instance whether this is real or not http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKUuUvDSXk4. They eliminated polygons completely which is step one in the right direction.
Again whether what they say is real or not is another question...
real gaming begins when i can tell the console how i want the game changed, and it responds accordingly.
“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

*Whoosh*
If the games you're playing have improved upon the graphics of last generation and nothing else, you need to play different games.
Graphical improvements are important, because everyone wants to play a good-looking game, but they have never been considered paramount by any developer. Graphics essentially come by themselves with new technology. If you see a game that looks great but doesn't innovate, it's because there was no focus on innovation. You can improve graphics and innovate at the same time, you know.
Oh boy.

The real gaming began with Rayman Origins, because now developers can turn concept art into actual levels. XD
