Forums - Gaming - About to start building my own gaming rig (PC) would love some help and opinions.

yeah I did some research and it looks like I'm looking at about $1000 for the PC I'm planning to build, top end everything.

What do you guys think, worth it?

Some of what I say may be repeating earlier posts.

  • You probably don't want to be assembling it yourself if you've never done anything like it before. Go to a specialist custom PC website. Service charge is minimal.
  • AMD CPUs are considerably cheaper than Intels. A quad-core Athlon is ridiculously cheap for its performance.
  • Don't skimp on the graphics card. It is arguably the most important part of your computer for gaming, and 9/10 times it is what limits your performance. No lower than a GTX 460 or whatever the AMD equivalent is (5700 I believe)
  • 1TB hard drive. You may not think you'll be able to fill it. You can and will. Steam sales do that.
  • 4GB of RAM should be fine, but you might want to go with 8 to be on the safe side.

That's plenty. Do you need to buy a monitor with it?

Even if you do, you'll have a good $850 left for your computer.

if you are a noob at this ,its probably best to set your budget and then shop around for the best stuff you can afford on the sites people have mentioned and then get someone to buld it for you,it would be a pretty good system,no point going crazy straight off the bat

I'm not sure if that card is worth it. nVidia has a much better chip out already, but only the high end one is out that is over 500$. But, if you wait a month or two, you could get a much better card than that for 430.

Alternatively you can go SLI or Crossfire for the same amount and for faster performance.

Even more alternativley, you can get a cheaper card that will still be enough today, and in the future buy another one like it (much cheaper than today) to greatly upgrade your graphics performance when you will need it.

Considering that you want to output to a HDTV, you are not considering lookin at resolutions higher than 1920x1080, for which a sub 300$ card currently is enough.

Are you considering an SSD as your Operating System disk? Because you should. - That would mean two HDDs, one ssd for the OS and another one for storage.

check tomshardware.com and anandtech.com for reviews guides, for psu corsair, seasonic, or antec. ram is hard to go bad with. i would say an i5 lga 1155 either ivy or sandy, best bang longes lasting. coolermaster hyper 212+ for cpu cooler gpus is really how much ya want to spend the nvidia gtx 680 is king right now but insanely hard to find and the 7xxx are all over priced till amd adjusts it when 6xx are actually available. best deal in terms of cost/performance value are the 6850/6870 right now from amd. cases are a personal thing, i just mode to a corsair 550d aand love it. i had a antec 300 illusion before great case, (would not spend more than 50 for it) the version 2 of it looks and is functionally better
