Square-Enix sucks at making RPGs.

Red Mages suck as well. A useless allrounder class that isn't good at anything.

Oh, if only I could take back the point I gave you at the best user award! Badgenome would never say something like this about the mages!

They suck, but look badass! At least they are better than the Time Mages! And the Blue Mages with their stupid venezian masks - thankfully Strago had the decency of ditching that!

Thank you for reminding me why the job systems of Final Fantasy games suck so hard. They put in 20 classes with about five of them being useful and the other 15 are only there so that they can say that there are 20 classes. Although they do try to justify the existence of so many classes by adding a token ability to them.

"See, there's one good skill, so you should use this class."

Seriously now... there's one let's player on youtube called HCBailly... he's pro at Rpgs, and a very funny guy. If you have the time try to check out his FFV let's play... I never played the game, but he tells a lot of things about classes, making all of them somewhat useful, minor some exceptions ( and uses Blue Mage a lot - it's that good)

I'll be honest. I thought this game was bad the first time I saw it. After watching this (well, skipping forward) I can safely say it's trash.

Let me know when Gust decides to make a 3DS game.

You dis Gust me.

This is what FInal Fantasy should be like! It even has Red Mages and... towns!

I don't know. I beat FF1 with just that guy by himself. It turns out that he can learn all the support abilities of both White and Black mages that power up melee classes and use them on himself, making him the best solo character. He's easier than 4 white mages or a monk/blackbelt.

If you spend enough time on a JRPG, you can make (almost) all characters and classes useful. Yes, you can set yourself challenges like that Final Fantasy I stuff Salnax mentioned, but that involves spending a lot of time on grinding. And yes, a Blue Mage can be good once you know where to learn the best abilities and which enemies are vulnerable to Level 5 Death.

But that's the thing. I don't want to spend hours to optimize my party or hours to turn something useless into something somewhat useful. Which I obviously can't know in advance, unless I use a guide.

No, no. He never spends time on the class to make them good or play them all just to show , he actually tries to optmize the game, play it with maximum eficiency. And by doing that he uses classes we never thougth to be good. He fights the final boss as a Ranger/Time Mage/Blue Mage and Thief team, and they all have a part.

I guess Square Enix is doomed then! Since thats all they make... mostly.

*cough* Deus Ex: HR, Tomb Raider, Just Cause 2, Sleeping Dogs

Did you not get the "mostly"?

They did Gyromancer with... Pop Cap, and it's quite good, so good I wished they could expand the thing into a universe of games - including RPGs.

And how do you think did he optimize the game? By playing it over and over again and injecting stuff from guides and forum chatter.

I just said that I don't want to use guides (definitely not on my initial playthrough) and you tell me that I would enjoy the flawed job systems of Final Fantasy games much more, if only I used a guide. That's not how I want to play games and if the developers force me to do it this way so that I can enjoy it, I just quit and call the game lame. That's exactly what I did with Final Fantasy V.

Yeah, I haven't played the game so I wouldn't know if I would be frustrated or not by choosing the "wrong" classes - i don't like guides on my first playtrhough too, but the first thing I do after I finish the game is read on on gamefaqs. With FFIII's job system on DS it wasn't so bad, so I guess it's similar, but with more classes. I don't think it's that bad to learn things the "hard" way. Probably that dancer class you choose will have a use, if not, who cares, give up on him and choose the Jester! (nobody in his right mind would pick those in sequence, but you get the point - which is... it's fun to experiment too)

FF V's job system is significantly improved over FF III's. By earning ability points the whole system is more transparent. You can check in the menu how many APs you need and your gains are displayed at the end of each battle.

What this means is that I am much less tolerant than you. What you consider "not so bad", I think of as horrible.

The problem with the job system is that it's hard to say if you are good to go. You play some hours and then you may notice that one or more of your characters are really getting nowhere and become a liability to the party. Retooling your setup may require an hour of mindless grinding, especially when Square-Enix has the genius idea to make specific bosses only vulnerable to certain abilities.

FF III and FF V also aren't that much fun to play to begin with, so that doesn't help either.

I usually pick up one job that is guaranteed to be good (like the fighter, ninja or black mage), one to cure the others, one that has a good chance of being good but is different (like the Dragoon or Summoner) and one just to laugh (jester, dancer, etc), so the chances of that happening are minimal. In Final Fantasy III I had that problem only in the final boss, but the fight was so epic and dramatic (I survived for a long time before she killed me), that I felt that while my classes were not good enough, it was more fun to suffer a little bit more, grind one-two hours or so, than to beat her with 4 Ninjas/Onion Knights.

I usually pick a fighter, black mage, white mage and a fourth class I expect to be good and I still don't like the system.

It's not my favorite system too, but oh well, I don't hate it. What is your favorite then? Of the newer ones Radiant Historia character evolution system/battle system was great, I had a great time playing it. But then I watched that same guy's let's play of it, and boy, was I playing it "wrong"!

My least favorite is Final Fantasy VIII... junction...
