I am pretty sure ms is planning on having nice integration between their xbox console, home pcs, tablets, and phones since if i remember right they will all be running windows 8 (the xbox being some sort of gimped version). But i do not think they will launch with a tablet "controller"

The Current Xbox 360 will currently connect with the different versions of Windows Phone 7. (Which is like a tiny tablet) I would expect Windows 8 would have apps to connect with the X360 in the same way and probably more ways.

So I think Microsoft will embrace the new Windows 8 tablets, rather than make their own. That's my prediction.

If the Wii U succeeds, it will be because of how Nintendo uses the tablet (and thus how Nintendo indirectly encourages third parties to use the tablet), in a way that works to expand opportunities for local multiplayer and to expand gameplay substance

The possibilities are certainly there, but will they come to fruition? Nintendo certainly didn't need to take the tablet route with Wii U, just as they didn't especially need to go with Motion Controls for the Wii. In both cases they need something to expand the audience and allow them to create games that will get people who are apathetic towards console gaming as it is introduced (or reintroduced) to the fold, but the "what" of that is up to them individually.

I think MS is once again, in the best position to do this. They wanted to unite all their platforms with the new Windows 8 OS. PC, Tablet, Gaming, Phone. Sony? Maybe not.

How come it is that hardcore gamers seem to be so god damn anti change?! Remember that the analog stick once were new! And even the D-pad were new stuff! These two things changed, no - revolutionized gaming in almost every aspect! Don't be hating untill you've atleast tried the stuff!
