If the Wii U succeeds, it will be because of how Nintendo uses the tablet (and thus how Nintendo indirectly encourages third parties to use the tablet), in a way that works to expand opportunities for local multiplayer and to expand gameplay substance

The possibilities are certainly there, but will they come to fruition? Nintendo certainly didn't need to take the tablet route with Wii U, just as they didn't especially need to go with Motion Controls for the Wii. In both cases they need something to expand the audience and allow them to create games that will get people who are apathetic towards console gaming as it is introduced (or reintroduced) to the fold, but the "what" of that is up to them individually.
