You think sales will be that strong after the launch of next gen? It would be amazing for a console to sell over 10m in the year after launch imo, espescially with sales already decling YOY. I'm thinking more like this:
Jan 2013: 74 (14) - Should be a decent year.
Jan 2014: 83 (9) - I don't see it doing 10m+ with saturation and all next gen consoles being available for the entire year of 2013.
Jan 2015: 88 (5) - This should definitely see a big drop with next gen consoles likely seeing price cuts.
Jan 2016: 91 (3) - Begins dying here.
I guess I may be a little too optimistic about the launch of next generation consoles. We'll see.
A little thing to remember is that the PS2 has sold almost 48 million units since the PS3 launched. There will be people who opt for the PS3 over PS4 just as people opted for the PS2 over the PS3. It'll have a 10 plus year life cycle, just like it's predecessors. Hell, the PS2 will probably still be selling when the PS4 is launched. Like I said before, it will hit 100 million. I'll go a little bit further and say 'It'll surpass the PS1's total'.

The PS2 sold so much during it's succeeding generation because 1.) it was hugely popular and 2.) it's successor (the Ps3) had a crappy launch. We know that the 1st reason will not apply to the PS3. The 2nd reason may or may not apply depending on how well the PS4 does. For that I don't think the comparison between the PS2 and PS3 will prove accurate.
90M on Top! But wait, PS3 is the 3rd Sony console.
Why don't you comparing PS3 sales with PS1 or PS2?
All I gotta say is: Wii!
Switch: SW-5066-1525-5130
XBL: GratuitousFREEK
Congratulations!
Really shows how much this industry has grown - NES, the top console of it's era, is outsold by the last placed selling console of this generation.
Congrats to the PS3 for outselling my favorite system of all time.
Regarding its lifetime sales, well, the console will eventually be a $149 blu-ray playing game system with motion controllers, so it comes right down to whether or not Sony's 1st party teams begin to create games that appeal to the broader market and are synonymous with the Playstation brand. If they can, the PS3 would easily sell over 100m. If not, it'll probably finish at just over 90m.

Well, Wii will do it despite Ninty isn't even trying anymore, it would be just fair that PS3 and XB360 do it too, as Sony and MS are still seriously trying instead.
But even if they don't, this gen will have enjoyed an incredible growth from the previous one anyway.
If they can keep pushing the PS3 in the developing countries after the next generation starts like they do now with the PS2, then maybe they can scrape 100m.
"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY." --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
