Xenoblade or Last Story? If I was to get one, which should I get?

You should check Arc rise fantasia also....a very solid classic jrpg experience...maybe you did already...

I was more impressed by the Last Story trailer, so I think I'll pick that up when it comes out

The same thing i had with the patch for Mario Kart 7, i have it there but i can install or download whenever i want, after a while i decided not to because i don't play online and i use my 3DS online only in free Nintendo Wi-Fi places.

Xenoblade Chronicles easily, it's IMO at the pinnacle of the RPG genre.  However, at the same time it is highly accesible to those who aren't JRPG fans, as it doesn't contain many of the genre's cliches and tropes, once one gets used to the battle system (it's one of my favourites in any RPG, but I didn't feel like I knew what was going on when I first started for a while). You'll also get at least 80 hours gameplay minimum from the main story, for me it was 102 hours and I did a lot, but by no means all, of the subquests and no post-game stuff.  The world is huge to explore and loads of side quests to do.

The Last Story is still a good game, just a solid 8/8.5 out of 10 compared to the 9.5/10 out of 10 for Xenoblade Chronicles.  Sakaguchi stated that he wanted the game to be seen as an RPG game with elements of RPGs from both Japan and the West, and I agree with him.  The story will last you 25-30 hours and then you might get some more on multiplayer and post-game stuff.  TLS is very 'streamlined', in regards to the fact that it very rarely deviates from the story: almost no exploration, side quests, very few chances to explore the main city (which I have to say is probably the best hub world I know), etc; it's similar to Metal Gear Solid, if you've played them, just not as good.  The battle system is good, but I hope a sequel exists where it can be refined a little.

Basically, I would recommend Xenoblade Chronicles over The Last Story, but I don't think you can go too wrong with either.  It's just the former will last you several times longer and is more enjoyable during that time.
