When the PS3 started disastrously with a $2 billion loss (fiscal year ending March 2007), the majority of people thought that Sony wouldn't cut the price of the system in its first year, because they couldn't afford to. Sony did it regardless, so a PSV price cut will happen no later than October 2012. |
Hmm...well you're right about the price drop, it happened 8 months after release. The only thing though it was a repricing of the 60gb model from $600 to $500, a while after the $500 20gb model stopped production. They pushed to eliminate the 60gb ps3 and replace them with the 80gb. Essentially a price drop, but it wasn't made because of demand specifically, that was the 20gb. The change from 60gb to 80gb was a production decision to adjust the costs of production more towards Sony's favor, because well let's face it their launch pricing wasn't beneficial.
The difference with the Vita is that it isn't that expensive. Shocking I know. $250-$300, while still concerning, isn't that much over the 3ds $170. (face it the 3ds is underpriced because of their mishap with their launch, should have been $200) Its also quite a bit cheaper, than the newest smartphones and tablets, around half. The vita is in a much different position than the ps3. It's entering an already developed online service, something the ps3 had to do as it went. It has a plethoria of games on the horizon. It's not hard pressed to manufacter itself cheaper to fix a fiscal management issue and trying to father in new processor technology. Given all this I would suggest you reconsider your prediction of the first price cut. PS3 cut the price after 8 months, why would Vita after 6? As far as Sony needing to...well let's see what the first 3 months of sales are like. I expect an excellent first week, but I can't say for the rest of it given the animosity plauging the internet and causing distrust among impressionable readers. It could be very similiar to Japan, but after a world wide launch and once Japan starts picking them up due to new titles, the rest of the world (namely the scrutinous USA) will gladly accept it into the mobile family.
Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
