Forums - Sales Discussion - Tretton hoping for half-million PS Vita sales in first three weeks of US launch

Sony is using my favorite philosophy of: Aim really low, then your never disappointed =)

Yes, because 500k units isn't pretty high expectations considering other US launches in recent time /sarcasm

Just waiting for that PS Vita to come out so I can play some full featured games on the go with that beautiful screen and control scheme...

I bought one. 499,999 more to go Sony.

Ask stefl1504 for a sig, even if you don't need one.

For a comparison, here's the VGC data for some other systems in USA.

  3DS PsP X360 Wii Ps3 DS
Week 1 419,000 408,000 305,000 463,000 139,000 486,000
Week 2 94,000 170,000 82,000 153,000 57,000 171,000
Week 3 70,000 111,000 43,000 111,000 89,000 167,000
Total:  583,000 689,000 430,000 727,000 285,000 825,000

500,000 seems about reasonable. It won't have the same impact as the PsP did, and it's obviously no Wii or DS. In between 3DS and X360 definitely does seem the likely spot.

Thank you for posting this table, I was about to do so as people don't seem to use the tools available on VGChartz before speaking, heh.

Actually I just checked and the 3DS, in its first 3 weeks in ALL of the Americas, sold about 600k. So no, I actually think that wouldn't be too bad of a figure.

guess tretton actually knows what hes talking about unlike the people here claiming sony are just aiming low so they can boast later.

No it's definitely low. The 3ds had a bad launch and did 581k in 3 weeks. Whereas the PSP launched to 689k and the DS to 825k in 3 weeks.

So basically of recent handhelds he is hoping for the worst 3 week launch window? Seems strange that someone would hope their own product would have the worst launch. Especially since the 3DS was at the same price but had a much weaker launch line-up and cheaper hardware. We also know how it turned out for Nintendo as they had to drop the price. Yet he is hoping for lower sales? Very odd.

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

500k seems reasonable and doable.

I really don't get the point of him saying this though ...

The problem is not reaching 500 thousand right after the 3rd week, the problem is reaching this number and stall, like the japanese sales of the PS Vita

It's much more healthy to have stable good sales than 3 weeks of great sales and then pretty embarassing numbers onwards.

Well, but even with an initial ugly drop it can be too early to tell: look at 3DS and XB360, they had the worst 1st to 3rd week drops, 6:1 and 7:1, but they're currently going quite well in USA.

Edit @Seece: to make people talk more about it and get extra publicity for free?

Probably so the media doesn't take a good launch week (If it has one that is) and twist it into more doom and gloom stories like we have now.

Saw an article today saying they'd sold out all of the first editon pre-order bundles! Wonder how many that was?

I would hope they sold out of something that was pre-order only.

I don't even think Reuters exist to be honest, lol.

I believe the context for Tretton saying this is the great japanese lauch - and struggling subsequent weeks.

The discussion quickly turned to Vita's underwhelming sales in Japan since its mid-December release, which Tretton categorized as a "perception" issue. "Quite frankly, it scares me if people think that the Japanese launch is struggling. The fact is they sold 500,000 units in three weeks... I would be pleased if we did 500,000 units in the first three weeks here in the United States. I think that's a real healthy number for a new platform launch."

The thing is that most, if not all, of those systems had supply isuses, the Vita will have none

I am also quite surprised that we haven't had any data for first week sales, but I did see a few people buying them when I went to get mine...
