Forums - Sony - Call of Duty Vita: The true "game changer" in the West / Prediction Thread

"While hardly a shocking revelation, it’s been confirmed that Call of Duty is indeed Vita bound. In an interview with GameTrailers, newly-appointed SVP of PlayStation Brand marketing Guy Longworth dropped word that the title is in development.

Longworth reckons the title will be an “absolute game-changer” for the portable. It’s on for a fall release, though no further details were spared. It’s worth noting that the Vita is the first handheld platform that can properly support a full-blown Call of Duty FPS experience, so that alone will certainly turn heads"

"CoD is a big enough series to be a game changer", "Cool going to get it", "If this is done right, then it will be a game changer", "I already know several people who are buying it just for CoD", "its gonna make a lot people buy vita just for that", "CoD players pay hundreds of dollars just for the best headphones and controllers", "if exclusive, I'm sold", "I'll buy the Vita version when it comes out", "I will definitely be purchasing the vita version", "Will it sell hardware? A good amount, for sure", "Anybody who doesn't think this will sell systems is nuts", "did everyone saying its not a game changer forget MW2 sold 12 million copies in its first week?".....

Clearly many people are excited for the upcoming CoD release on Vita, and are expecting millions of others to have the same feelings for this blockbuster franchise making a full game on a handheld for the first time. Do you think it will be a game changer?

Why not make some predictions? - I'll be happy to make a table for future reference, so you can all laugh at each other in the future. Personall,y I see this title selling to around 25% of those that would otherwise play CoD on a PS3, so I'll go for around 5 million. I can see how this number has potential to be much higher however- it might even become a 10-15million seller hit!

0.15 million, assuming the Vita is still around come this fall.

I think it is too early to tell. Come back to this a few months after the Vita has launched and after the game has actually been announced and unveiled!

The first question to ask is what will be the ratio of digital to physical games? We don't really know much in Japan, but I think is fair to say that physical sales have been poor

Then the question is what will it be? Will it be a port of Black Ops 2, or will be it be a separate game. The real thing is that CoD sells for multiplayer, so that is what matters...

But whatever the case, I think it will sell well. I have been thinking what are the games that will lead to the PS Vita taking off in the West, and the ones I were thinking of were CoD, GTA and GT, so let's hope at least one of these does actually come this year

Depends on what sort of game it is.. If its a port of black ops 2 then I wouldn't think as many people would buy a vita when they can play it on ps3/360. However if it's a brand new COD game that makes use of all vita features and can perform cross play with the ps3 then its a different story. That sort of game could sell over 7 million and move alot of hardware if marketed correctly and comes out with appropriate bundles. If Sony was smart they would advertise the hell out of it around the holiday season.

3 million first 6 months. (put down that one). 6 million lifetime.
If it's good this may be the first COD game I buy since MW2.

I really hope this boosts vitas sales, hopefully COD on PSV in NA will be what MH on PSP was for Japan.

800,000 first week. 3,5 million lifetime.

(Don't really see the point of lifetime predictions though as they assume we'll care about this thread about five years from now.)

I think people are overestimating a Call of Duty on Vita.

Call of Duty on PSP > 2 million

That was before Call of Duty became as famous as it is today, and while Vita likely will sell less than PSP it still has the better controls for FPS games (which even phone users tend to buy).

The thing about CoD, at least with the people I know, is that they buy it almost exclusively for the multi-player. Many have never even attempted to play the campaign. Even I, a somewhat serious gaming fanatic, have never finished he campaign of CoD Black Ops and that campaign is supposed to be four hours long.

At the same time, many of us bought expensive head sets just for this game (I wasn't serious enough to buy MW3, btw). Communication was a big deal. Community was very important. The size of the screen was VERY important. A bigger screen meant the difference between seeing the enemy or them seeing you.

No doubt that the Vita is more than capable of running an adequate CoD. My bigger concern is if it will offer anywhere near the kind of experience CoD players expect. Will we be able to talk and understand what's being said? Will we feel the explosions? Are the Vita analog sticks responsive enough? Are people willing to play the Vita version over Wi-Fi (3G? NO WAY.) when the console version is likely right there?
