Forums - Sony - Why Skyrim Didn’t Play Nice With The PS3

"...so the game is definitely our most solid release regardless of platform.”

If Skyrim is their best effort yet, then I have to ask how buggy were their previous games? o_O I mean, there were plenty of bugs in Skyrim (including a couple of incredibly frustrating game-breaking ones) that I encountered, and I played the PC version.

This was my first Bethesda game, and I'll probably buy their next 'Elder Scrolls' game (as I really did enjoy myself in the world of Skyrim). But next time I'm waiting for their first couple of patches before I even consider buying it.

So Bethesda knew about the issues on PS3 but still released the game just so they can be rdy in time for their launch date? And these guys got almost all the GoY awards?!

Do you have any idea how this makes me feel?

Except massive open world games like Skyrim. Now we know why other games like The Witcher 2 are only being ported to the 360.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

These 'isolated incidents' on ps3 made some of the best reading on amazon.co.jp i've ever seen, its averaging below 2.5 out of 5 & the Japanese always have been most hilarious when faced with largely faulty products (they dont tolerate them at all). Even the amazon.com ranking is struggling to break 3 out of 5 stars & the first 6 or 7 pages is 1 and 2 star reviews (if ordered by most helpful first), other user review sites display similar trends.

Knowing a small amount about stats, maybe Bethesda's own test case is the isolated incident & they should be examining their own save games to see how they are playing to make it work (because mine certainly didn't, game breaking issues started hitting by 25 hours & I wasn't doing anything special like having a million quests running, as for the spells eating memory thing, I was using a non magic rogue styled character).

Infamous, Just Cause 2, GTA4, etc. says hi. Spare me, Bethesda is just some dev who was either too lazy to learn how to code for PS3 or just dont know how too. Its 2012 already

Another day, another developer telling their users they play their game wrong.

What did he expect. People to take on 1 quest at a time. Be careful not to knock anything over, don't go anywhere where you don't have to be yet, leave the shops alone, stealth by 90% of the enemies without disturbing them, and kill every dragon as soon as it pops up somewhere?

"Wr’ve got one guy who has seven dragons on the other side of the world, and a siege about to happen in this city and another 20 quests running. And, OK, this is what the game is trying to do and it’s having a hard time running that.”

Seems like a pretty standard scenario to me after playing for 50 hours...

Well, they're not blaming the users, just pointing out.

Do you know how much I envy the guys at Bethesda? Sorting through code, reworking algorithms, and improving memory management is one of my favourite things. I just love the satisfaction of efficiency gains.

This may sound weird, or down right crazy to most people. But I'm sure there are some who agree with me: the kinds of people who enjoy complex math problems, or puzzles.

I loved that about my job, nothing better then doing some clever coding to reduce memory usage to 10% and doubling the speed. Forget about STL and rewrite things as efficient as possible in c by checking out the assembly code it generates. Minimize memory movements and cut the amount of processing by as much as possible.
Ofcourse for every success there are just as many failures or highly elegant solutions that don't gain anything in the end.

I wouldn't mind working on the memory management of a game like Skyrim. Everything can be improved with some clever bit shifting. My fovorite C operators still are << >> & |

If you ignore the other openworld games that run fine.  Bethesda is just shit.

None of those other games have anywhere near the almost infinite number of quest combinations  / possibilities as Skyrim does, nor do they have as deep and complex of a leveling / character system.  And that's before we even start talking about the engine powering Skyrim, which is vastly more taxing on the hardware (for both consoles) than any of the engines powering those other aformentioned "open world" games.

The cold hard truth is that the PS3 just isn't as programmer friendly as the 360 / PC are, which are usually the lead development platforms for such games.  This also why early on in the PS3's life it missed out on several major multiplat releases like Bioshock 1 and Mass Effect 1, as well as The Orange Box, because it took the developers an extra year or two to get up to speed on the PS3.  If Sony wants to be successful next gen, they're going to have to make the PS4 much more developer friendly right out of the gate.

THe just Cause 2 world itself has the biggest overworld of any game this gen. Engine is taxing??? So what, get a better one. Yes the PS3 is hard to code for, but if they cant get it right by now, then there is no excuses, especially since Oblivion wasnt that bad as far as I heard.

BS, PS3 didnt miss out on ME1 because it couldnt handle it, it missed out on it cause MS moneyhatted, thats the cold hard truth. Bioshock same reason. Orange Box, whoever ported didnt know what the hell they were doing. Bethesda doesnt know what the hell they are doing. At least when it comes to PS3

Seeing as how the updates have made progress, it still doesn't excuse them for releasing a "broken" game imo. All for the sakes of releasing on the magical 11-11-11 date. I love Bethesda, but from now on I'm only buying their shit on PC.
