Forums - Gaming - I miss the games that Factor 5 made.

All right, let's narrow that down a bit.

I miss Rogue Squadron.

I mean look at it. THis was something like the first Gamecube game, came out a week before the system itself, and it held up pretty well in terms of graphics for the entirety of its generation.

These guys coudl do some voodoo.

More than that, though, the Rogue Squadron games were jsut fun. They took the space battles from the best sci-fi series ever in terms of space battles, then made them accessible and arcadey so anyone could play them. But the games were tough, too! Excellently balanced, beautiful, lots of ships, chock full of stuff for nerds to nerd out over.

Damn you, Lair. Damn you for taking away my favorite arcade space shooter franchise.

There aren't even any arcade space shooters in this style to replace it. A Mass Effect shooter along these lines would be incredible! Starfox? Hell yes I'd take that, give it to me! Or just another Rogue Squadron!

In my heart of hearts I want Rogue Squadron 4 on the Wii U. No foot missions. Lots of space combat from throughout the whole series, prequels and original trilogy and the NJO if they feel like it. I don't care! I just want the games back.

I agree near-entirely! Although, foot missions are okay, imo, on battles like Hoth and a few others who's name I've forgotten.

...but, I guess that sort of things could be reserved for Battlefront though...

Rebel Strike would have been incredible without the foot missions. They were an albatross around its neck.

I too miss Rogue Squadron.

Damn I think I'm gonna get RSII out now.... it's been a while.

Rogue Leader is still one of my favorite games ever. First time you take down a Star Destroyer? Amazing.

I don't really miss them. The last time I played Rebel Strike I noticed just how flawed it is (about a year ago). Not just the foot missions and the speederbike sequences, but the ridiculous length of the cutscenes compared to the time you actually play. And if you start a new file you have to watch that stupid stuff.

What would Factor 5 be capable of anyway? As soon as they try to go beyond flight missions, they fail horribly. As soon as they take the freedom to think up their own missions instead of basing them directly on the Star Wars movies, the quality drops notably (hence why Rogue Leader's flight missions far outdo Rebel Strike's). Lair sorta was Rogue Squadron 4, but without a movie license all the flaws shined through.

If we got a competent Star Fox last gen instead of the repeatedly delayed Namco mess, then neither Rogue Leader or Rebel Strike would have really stood out, just like the first Rogue Squadron didn't stand a chance against Star Fox 64.

So I guess what I am trying to say is that I would take a new Star Fox over a new Rogue Squadron any day of the week.

They're different kind of games, Rebel Strike's pacing was flawed but Rogue Leader was uniformly fantastic, and you're a soulless monster and I'm ringing your house with a line of salt to keep you inside of it.

Edit:

And on that point, most of Rogue Leader's missions weren't actually based on the movies. I think about 30% of them were lifted from the films.

I like Lair. That is my response to this thread.

I never played Lair. I never watched any videos of it. I saw a commercial and it looked slow.

Lair killed Factor 5.

I feel like I should clarify that a Starfox that took traditional corridor levels and then replaced the "all range" levels with larger, Rogue Leader-style semi-free roam missions? That would be amazing. I'd lose my mind over it.
